Basically, this movie is the ultimate nightmare for emetophobes. The
whole film is set during stomach flu season, and it uses that as a
device to further the film. Each character in the family gets hit one
by one and it can be rather difficult for an emet to watch.

However, if you can get past about an hour (that's right, an hour) of references to viral illness, it is a good film.

That sounds kind of scary....I hate how there is so much v* in
movies these days...it seems everyone is getting sick especially
    from drinking.

Well, in the movie's defense, there is only one scene of visible V*,
and the sickness is key to the plot, not some gag or anything. I think
    it's tastefully done, just a head's up.

Is the purpose of the movie to show how unsanitary dentists are? Or is there something else to the movie?

No, it's not about dentists in that way at all. The family just all gets hit with a sv*. I actually first heard this as a short story on NPR (national public radio here in the States) and then a friend and I rented it without me remembering what it was until we started getting into it. Ugh, I was standing in the hallway for much of the movie!!! It freaked me out more than a little bit!

I saw it several years ago. The story line is excellent. The one hour of SV is rough BUT, it made me feel not so alone with the fact that people, and families, get sick. I still am an emet. It did not help that.

I am not sure why they chose that title. I think the husband was a dentist? It was more just about families and relationships, in general. Probably stuff that you never picture your dentist going through?
