This is going to drive me insane. Right now it's in the 50s (F) and gorgeous out, sunny and warm. The forecast for the weekend has our high temps dropping to below freezing (as a high!). Everyone at my job has been coming in to chat and saying "oh, with this weather change, everyone is going to be deathly ill next week." Panic sets in, and I want to hop a plane to the equator.

Anyone have any idea why people always get sick when the weather changes? I think it's more when it gets colder out -I always rationalize it by saying that people get used to the warmer weather and don't dress appropriately for the weather change - but this isn't keeping me from being anxious about the coming weekend. One woman said "Thank God we have a three day weekend, because I know I'll be sick on Monday."

Ugh, why are these people so negative? It's like they assume everyone is going to get "deathly ill." Why be so dramatic? Deathly ill? I think people around here innately know I have a phobia and get some sort of bizarre schadenfreuden pleasure out of watching me concentrate on controlling my panic and squirting Purell at everyone.

    *big sigh* Thoughts?

I know how you feel....today here in NC it's 70 and this sat. the high is going to be 35 with possible snow.... But sad to say eveyone around here is sick anyway so i hope it can't get any worse than it is now...but people are always going to talk about illness no matter what...how unfortunate for us emets to always have to be the ones to hear the conversations and then panic for weeks about it. It sucks.......I have bronchitis now and I am worried about other things getting into my system being already sick. But anyway, just to let you know...i understand what you are saying here....people are nuts!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

1987! Where are you from? You totally explained my weather situation here in Ohio and everyone at my work has been saying the same stuff! I had to laugh to myself when I read your post because I could have written it!

I think the majority of illness that is effected by weather is like sinus stuff from pressure changes and whatnot. Don't listen to the creeps at work.

    yeah im from indiana..
and most people around here get sick when the weather changes.. meaning..
from warm to cold.. and from cold back to warm..
but thats usually ALWAYSSSSSSSSSSS colds and sinus stuff...
i think you can only get stomach bug sick by the weather if by the weather you mean not washing your hands. dont worry about those people. illness and sickness to them could mean a stuffy nose!

i'm from california, and the same thing is going on here. but last
week, when the weather actually got a lot warmer... that's when i got
one of the worst viral bugs ever! i even thought it was mono for a
while. but don't worry; nothing to do with V* or anything. it was just
a really bad cold basically. but i can sympathize!

just be sure to take lots of vitamin c!

A friend of mine who studied health said to me why people get so sick in the winter is because we all huddle around in the same room with all the heating on, this keeping the bugs alive and as we are all closer together more prone to catching! We also don't get as much fresh air (spend less time outside, don't keep windows open..)in the winter and rooms tent not to use proper ventilation in the winter, if that makes sense..

But if you keep clean (wash hands etc.) and do everything that you normally do then I don't see why it should pose a problem.. I'm sure people won't be getting sick, they are just over-reacting (as most people generally do now days!) do not worry

I don't think that a change in weather can make people sick. It's viruses that make people sick. But, like Liz28 said, it can have a lot to do with sinuses and pressure changes. People are so dramatic.

Liz28-Where in Indiana are you from? I from Indiana, too!

Shiva - I'm in the NYC area. The cold front we are expecting is the same one that you are getting, just probably 12 hours later. I love your response, that you could have written the post! I am so not alone, ha ha.

I rebelled after posting that, and the next person that mentioned getting sick got a slinky thrown at her (I have many slinky's on my desk at work).

As much as my emetophobia sux, I am normally a very happy and optimistic person. I am amazed like nothing else that all these people are so negative. I am not up to Sage's level, but I have made it very far, and to battle this negativity constantly just drains me. Sinuses and colds are one thing, but why do these folks always have the need to be so dramatic as in "deathly ill?" I've seen deathly ill, and as much as I am an emetophobe, deathly ill is much worse than a sv. *sigh*

Funny thing - I am one of those people that never takes sick days. Unless I v* ha ha. But I show up at work with fevers and flus and you name it, where most people would stay in bed. I find it quite ironic that I can handle most discomfort (even a broken ankle once, without anything stronger than Tylenol) just fine, but the thought of v* puts me in a tiz. Oh, just the phrase "deathly ill" got me freaked out earlier. WTH?

emetojackie - I think I am going to make more conscious efforts to air out my apartment on a regular basis, cold weather be d@mned!

Oh, my best buddy at work has had the sv twice in the past month!!! And he's been over my house lots!!! Ugh. But so far, so good on my part. We shared a beer last Wednesday and then on Saturday he was violently ill all day, but I didn't catch it. I haven't allowed him near my desk all week though Hehheh.

hahah good plan, even if its just for a little bit, or just keep a little window open it does help a lot! I was glad she told me that, but everyone hates me at breaks at college as I *Insist* we all go outside lol!

I'm sure everyone will be fine, they are all over-reacting big time!! x

I'm in NJ and the high was about 60 this afternoon. It'll drop to 30 by Monday. Fine by me, I like it cold. *weird*

Some people with chronic pain, asthma, or sinus problems may experience
a worsening of symptoms during weather changes. It has more to do with
the barometric pressure rising and falling than it does temperature.

I'm worthless without a bottle of ibuprofen when low pressure systems come in. I love rain, but my sinuses and joints don't. ;D

the weather conditions you're describing are exactly the same as where
i am (west virginia, near ohio). it has me nervous too.
i've heard that the reason weather changes make people sick is that
viruses thrive during the warm weather...but i don't know if that's the
reason for it or not. i agree that people are just being dramatic
about it, people will come down with colds next week, but they already
have them! the weather has been up and down so much around here
this season that this is just same old, same old, don't let them worry
    you.
