If anyone out there has ever had a laparoscopy or laparotomy, please share your experience. I have been an absolute wreck since I found out I need this to remove a dermoidovarian cyst. Not to mention all the SV* going around. I need help!

I've had surgery done with a laparoscope and didn't even feel sick
afterwards. The only discomfort came from pain and some bloating from
having my abdomen filled with carbon dioxide. (They do get most of the
CO2 evacuated once they've finished-- you might feel sort of like a
balloon, that's all.)
Also tell someone about your phobia. I'm sure they'll work with you.
They generally give anti-emetics without you having to ask, anyway. :}
Good luck with your surgery.

I am having a lapsurgery on March 3! I too am scared about the surgery, being in the hospital withsick people, etc.I agree with One Who Squeaks, and will be telling the doctor and anesthesiologist (sp?)about the emet and ask them to have anti-emetics put into the IV and have them ready for recovery.If you have to stay over, I would consider asking for a private room as well. I told my husband if Iend up having to stay, tell them I want a privateroom - don't want to be in a room all night with someone else who may be v*.
Good luck with your surgery!

If you're worried about catching something in the hospital- I wouldn't. My boyfriend is a nurse in the ICU and is in the hospital a minimum of 48 hours a week- the only time he has been sick in the past year is when he has caught something from me! Medical staff are also really careful about hand-washing and purelling everything- and from what I have read it's a lot easier for young kids to catch something while in the hospital, only because they put things like blankets and stuffed animals in their mouths after they have been playing with them.
Good luck with the surgeries,

To be on the safe side, you might want to tell your nurse or Dr. that you have a fear of n* and v* and want an antiemetic. I have had many surgerys and have never felt sick after because I always warn the nurses and doctors and they make sure the anesthesiologist gives me an antinausea medication. Others that don't ask beforehand just have to ride out the n* afterwards.
I hope your surgery goes well. It is always scary.
Thanks everyone.I definitely am asking fora private room and LOTS of antiemetics!
I've had this type surgery and did fine. I did tell the doctor and anyone else that would listen that I needed lots of anti-emetics. They let me go home within a few hours of the surgery which allowed me to relax.
I did have a weird side effect however. When they do this type of surgery that push air into your abdominal cavity. For days after the surgery I could feel the air bubbles moving around, and if I sat up too quickly they would rise fast and hurt so bad in my shoulders. Plan to be in bed a few days.
