I was sitting down, eating take-out, which is something I haven't done in a while, and that is upsetting enough. We were watching tv- America's Funniest Videos when a v* scene came on. I didn't even expect it, and it was very very graphic. A little girl was sitting in front of a cake on her birthday when a little boy behind her projectiled v* all over everyone and the cake. I immediately stopped eating, and I am now feeling sick. I am shaking and very upset. I feel like now that I watched it, it will happen to me. I never eat takeout, and now I am scared I am going to get food posioning. Help!! I can't believe that would play that it was so disgusting and very upsetting, and now I can't stop thinking that I will get sick, and I also can't get that clip out of my head! Edited by: mitch04133

I saw that too!!! I was just going to ask if anyone else saw it. I am still upset about it. I can't believe everyone found it so funny, and I was sitting there with tears in my eyes. They shouldn't show stuff like that on tv.

Michelle- I'm sorry it upset you and hit you by surprise. Put the takeout in the fridge for the timebeing, and when your stomach (and you) settle down give it another go. What you saw has no bearing on what you are eating, which is more than likely fine and won't make you sick. In a few hours you'll probably be hungry again

But....I can honestly see the humour in the situation. If I were there I would have been completely horrified- but would have probably been able to laugh about the irony of the situation afterwards once the panic wore off. It actually happened a few years ago and my friend's son's 3rd birthday- he went to blow out the candles and BAM! Up came his dinner- all over the spiderman ice-cream cake. That was definitely my cue to leave- disgusting- ABSOLUTELY. But, it's kinda funny in hindsight, as the situation was completely unexpected. (Not to mention everyone just froze- it was like some sort of weird tableau). It must be funny to others as well- on every comedy picture/video website there is at least one vomit-related item, and they are often one of the most-viewed on the site.

To me vomit in an of itself is horrifying and disgusting (hence the phobia)- but I can see the humour in certain situations involving vomit. In Xmas 2004 my brother 'accidentally' vomitted on myxmas present from him after coming home from his staff party trashed (he had two bags in his room- one was the garbage, the other contained my present- guess which one he picked). At the time I was absolutely furious (not to mention completely freaked out- I shook for 2 hours)- but now I can definitely laugh about the situation. I mean seriously, what are the odds that he would do that on the present of the one person in the family that is an emetophobe? This year for xmas I made him put my present under the tree right away, lol.

I guess the moral is that you may be freaked out right now- but this is only short-term. It's easy to get certain images stuck in your head- whenever I find myself starting to focus on something like that I try to replace it with another image I find comforting- I think about my cats, my boyfriend, etc. That, or I try to focus on the humour of the situation, and not the vomit itself. This works for me (possibly because overall I can see the humour in having this phobia at all)- but may not work for everyone.

I agree i really think they should put a warning on or somthing first, cause some people are very sensitive to thoes kinda things... I remember when my phobia was at its peak when i was 8years old... i was playing with a bunch of kids that were family friends... and then this one girl was telling this other boy to stop running so fast or else he might *v ...she was joking.... but that hit me hard and I sat down refusing to play with the kids afterwards cause i was scared i might V*

mitch04133 I hope you feel better and dont worry about V* just try to get other thoughts in your head.. listen to some music watch something funny... and maybe after an hour you dont feel full anymore and just remind yourself... even if you were to V* you cant cause theres nothing to V* out anyways.

OH MY GOD!!! I got on here to type the EXACT same thing. And I do NOT think that was funny AT ALL. THat kid looked so sick and it probably ruined that poor little girl's birthday party. Normally vomit scenes don't bother me too much but for some reason that REALLY upset me too. That is not funny, not one bit. It is ust gross. Normally I love that show, i thin it is hilarious, but that was freakin' disgusting. I was so upset I couldn't even watch it anymore and I immediately regretted just eating dinner. You aren't the only one. That was freakin unacceptable. My husband, who is totally non-emeteophobe even though it was tasteless.

Mjewell, my bf was sickend by it too. We were talking about it, and he said that scene even made his stomach turn. I mean it was very graphic, not to mention very projectile. It makes me shutter to even think about it again...ok, got to go and stop thinking about it.

    Michele,

My sympathies are really more with that boy. After the embarrassment of having vomited in public AND ruined his friend's birthday cake, he has to live down the clip being shown on national tv. It wouldn't surprise me at all to see him become one of us as a result. He obviously had no idea what was happening. You could see him retching, but he didn't do anything until the vomit came out. What's interesting is that it wouldn't have traveled as far as it did if he hadn't blocked it with his hand.

I really hope some emets and others will file a complaint about this with the FCC. I think the clip fits their definition of indecent. Here it is:

In our assessment of whether material is “patently offensive,” context is critical. The FCC looks at three primary factors when analyzing broadcast material: (1) whether the description or depiction is explicit or graphic; (2) whether the material dwells on or repeats at length descriptions or depictions of sexual or excretory organs; and (3) whether the material appears to pander or is used to titillate or shock. No single factor is determinative. The FCC weighs and balances these factors because each case presents its own mix of these, and possibly other, factors.

The complaint form is available online here: http://svartifoss2.fcc.gov/cib/fcc475B.cfm

Yep. I'm sure in a few hours all will be forgotten.

On a more upbeat note, I was so excited when I got on here to see that others saw that scene and were upset too that I stormed into the bathroom to tell my husband and he was standing there naked ready to get in the shower. LOL. He didn't understand why i was so excited that you guys had posted about it too.

I saw a different v* scene on AFV about a week ago. They were taping a wedding ceremony and the ring bearer projectile v* everywhere in the middle of the ceremony! It was also totally unexpected and truly disgusting.I couldn't eat the rest of that day. Why does anyone think that kind of thing is funny? Even if you're not an emet, some poor little kid being sick is not something you want to see. What is wrong with people!

I can't stand seeing people v* on tv either! And it is everywhere now. I used to like MTV, but now can't stand it due to all the v* scenes I have had to watch on different shows. It makes me so mad that some of the reality shows are so graphic. I have to keep a pillow close by me to be ready to cover my eyes when I watch some of my favorite shows, i.e. Survivor, 24, just to name a few. I almost banned Survivor after last season when they were showing 3 different people getting sick. What kind of entertainment is that?

Yeah I will definatly never watch that show again I filed a complaint with the FCC, I'm pretty sure it will be ignored but we can at least try, right?

I agree, they are so cautious of racism, swearing and adult situations on the primetime shows yet they show v* scenes like its nothing. I just don't understand.

Here's how I could view thisin a non-emet way. While making a bm or knowing that othersdodoes not frighten me, I definatly do NOT want to watch it on TV. So why is it ok to show such graphic v* all the time? I just don't understand.Edited by: lucinda

I don't understand how you could possible compare racism to vomit! They aren't even in the same category- things like racism DO diserve more attention and consideration when it comes to displaying it in the media than a normal biological function- which vomitting is. The fact that you are even comparing the two is disturbing to me.

I think that showing vomitting on TV may be in bad taste- but I don't think it warrants a major complaint. It all goes down to potty humour- stuff like this, fart jokes, smelly bathroom gags and public urination seem to be popular as of late. If it didnt sell and people didnt find it funny, movies like American Pie wouldn't make so much at the box office. The only way I think this trend will stop is if people stop watching.

As for reality tv- well, dehydration, excessive physical activity, eating disgusting food and drinking too much DO cause vomitting- I don't think you can get any more real than that. Isn't that the point of reality tv?

On all the listing of phobias that I have seen, arachnophobia always ranks higher than emetophobia- and people can fear spiders to the same extent that we fear vomit- to the point that they become agoraphobic for fear of seeing a spider outside- or can't sleep because they are convinced there is a spider in the house. Should the media not show any spiders? Should tv shows that may portray a warning is aspider is to be shown? What about lesser known fears, such as fear of cotton balls, chalk, and clowns-if everything everyone feared wasbanned from the media, we would be watching a blank screen 24-7.

crimsongoddess; I am not sure why you are getting so upset with me, I never said 'v* is like racism' I was stating they are so careful of a list of things but not v* wich seems to offend a great deal of people. I am not sure why you are being so nasty towards me, but I don't appreciate it.

I am not being nasty towards you- have I personally attacked your character in some way that I was not aware of? Just because I disagree it does not mean that I am trying to attack you in any way.

I was just trying to make the point that racism is a justifiable thing for a network to worry about- and that manymore people are affected and held back by racism, as it is still a prevalent problem in society. Yes, some people fear vomit- but at the end of the day it is a natural thing, and definitely does not warrant as much concern as racism.

I was the one who pointed out at first if you read my post that tv shows make a point to highlight that there programme may have some kind of racisim ect in it so why not warn people about other things?

yes racisim is higher on the agenda to be tackling on tv ect but its restricted on some levels to protect people and as we are talking about tv and not just real life but what is showen I completly believe that they should have some sort of warning of explicit bodily fluid content but this is just my view towards the situation,it doesnt cost the network anymore and gives them far more respect from there viewers to protect them from things like that.

look at how is has set off most people on this thread then think about the many people who have emet but dont know about it at the moment or just have a mild form who have been ditured dont you think that they might also be putting in compliants for there own personal reason?

I had read it- but must have slipped past the radar because I definitely would have commented much in the same way- must have been late at night.

I just think that complaining and campaigning to get these images removed- even though I fully admit that some may find them to be in bad taste- just reinforces the idea that vomit is something to be feared. Yes, many people have this phobia- but it isnt something that in my opinion people should choose to live with as opposed to fight against. By saying that it should not be viewed in the public media to me says thatvomit is SO horribleand thatthis fear isjustified- which I don't think it is. Do I enjoy watching vomit scenes on tv and in movies? Hell no- I usually end up covering my face and losing my appetite. I've been trying to force myself to watch as of late with mixed results. Do I think my phobia should dictate what is being shown in the media? Also no.

Mitch- I was totally not trying to criticize you for being upset- I can understand how an image like that can make someone with this phobia upset. Hell, if I was eating and watching TV I probably wouldn't have been all that pleased either!

I just don't think that campaigning to get these images removed is necessarily the best option- just my opinion.

never said anything about campiaining to get it off the tv!

We all have different stages of this and we cant always be accomidating to people who have this phobia no!

But, a warning would be good, personally, obviously it isnt to everyones thoughts but atleast knowing what you are about to see its still on the tv and if someone chose to watch it then thats great they might have found it funny ect but if not and the warning was there saved a few pannic attacks then whats the harm?

mind you its a pointless argument as the tv network probbaly wouldnt bother its arse.

V* is a GROSS bodily function, so is poop. They won't show poop on TV, so why should they show V* so openly?? They certainly should have posted a warning. They do have warnings on shows like COPS (where V* has occurred) and any medical shows on TLC and stuff. Bodily functions are worse than spiders, or other things people fear, such as lightning or something like that. If you're arachnophobic, you run the risk of seeing spiders/bugs on TV, but as for V*, whether people are emet or not, is just gross! Like I said, a warning maybe even at the beginning of the program stating that there may be some unsuitable and graphic shots on the show would be appropriate.

I agree, I think that vomting scenes should come with a warning. I mean I can watch TV and reality shows and see other people vomit and it doesn't really bother me, but at the same time I would like to NOT see it. It's not funny at all, I mean why would they even show it on AFV? I remember this scene from Family Guy a while back (I discussed it on this board too) where the family drank ipecac to see who could vomit last. They did like this whole graphic vomiting scene for like three minutes...it was nasty! I didn't think it was funny AT ALL. There should be warnings. And I don't blame you for freaking out cause you were EATING when you were watching it! I would have done the same thing.

Yeah, but if we pooped out of our mouths I'm reasonably sure that it would be shown. There are s*** gags in movies and on TV, but what stops them from showing someone actually urinating or pooping is the fact that the regions from which it come are pretty taboo to show in general- to the point where they have time-restrictions to how long you can even show certain body parts on TV or in a movie. And they do have poop and piss gags on movies and tv- they may not show the actual act (for the reasons previously mentioned) but can be decently graphic. And then, of course, there is always Jackass.

<<Bodily functions are worse than spiders, or other things people fear, such as lightning or something like that>>

But this is according to someone who has a fear of a certain bodily function- I'm sure an arachnophobic would disagree. I think you would have to admit that you are a little biased here.

<<If you're arachnophobic, you run the risk of seeing spiders/bugs on TV>>

Yes, and if you're an emetophobic you have to know that you run the risk of seeing vomit on TV or in movies. In some cases, it serves a purpose and is related to the plot. In others, it is just gratuitous. Such is the nature of the entertainment business.

I think that a warning for stuff like this can begin a slippery slope phenomena- and other types of groups will start writing and campaigning to have different warning that suit their interests displayed before the airing of certain programs. Where does it end?

Californiagirl, I agree with you 100%!! They have warnings before blood scenes, before a little bit of vulgar language, so why not warn about v*. Especially since that program is on right around the time when people have just finished dinner. Not only that, some people do not enjoy seeing others v*, emet or not. Like Mitch said, it was projectile which made it even worse.
