I've started doing child care for a friend's children, ages 8 and 3.5. I watched them yesterday morning from 9 am to 5 pm. My children and me are the only ones these kids have been around for several days according to their mom.

So Kim (the mom) calls me tonight around 10 and says Emily (the 3.5 yo) threw up. It hadn't been that long since she did so they're not sure if it's a bug or not. It was like 3 times in a row quickly.

OMG, I'm totally freaking out! My heart is in my throat and I feel like crying. Please be honest with me--what are our chances of having caught this yesterday? The kids have been acting fine today but every sniffle and cough they're making has me on pins and needles. Kim said Emily acted fine all day today too. When can I breathe a sigh of relief? What's the longest you can go before showing signs?

    I'm SO scared right now!

I hate to say this, but, you have about a good 24-48 hours to wonder and worry. Sorry. :-(

If I were you, I would keep my diet light - bananas, rice, applesauce, potatoes. Nothing greasy, heavy, or hard to digest until you are out of the "zone".

I would say that if your friend's kids were not showing symptoms when they were with you then there's a high chance that you will not catch anything at all, nor will your kids. The most common route of transmission is fecal/oral so there's not much chance of this happening if they were asymptomatic. Some viruses can be airborne, but again you would need to be in close contact with the actual v* to be infected this way.

If your friend's daughter was clear of any symptoms when you were with her, then you have very little to worry about.

    Hope this helps.

Well we made it through the night. I tried calling her this morning to see how Emily was but she didn't answer. I'm hoping it's because Emily's fine and they're at church but I'm not holding my breath.

I think if we can make it through tonight then we'll be okay. Ugh, I hate this waiting!

I'm breathing a sigh of relief now. Nobody got sick last night and I just talked to Kim this afternoon. She said Emily hasn't gotten sick again and she thinks it may be allergy related. I sure hope so! I'll still probably be a little on guard tonight though but I think we're in the clear.

Come on spring weather! I HATE winter!
