I was wondering, has anyone, or anyone you know had a definite case of food poisoning from any particular restaurant? If so, what was the restaurant, and what did you order? I have always wondered this............. Edited by: californiagirl

No, never had food poisoning in the thirty-six years I've been around! - I do feel a bit safer being a veggie though!

I think this is a question you may not want the answer to... it does happen on the rare occasion, but if someone says, yes, I had food posioning and tells you what they ate.. I have a feeling you may aviod that resturant/food.

When I was in college, a girl I knew got FP from chicken Mcnuggets. Not really a shocker, but I won't let DH eat them now, and I definatly would never let my kids (future kids that is)eat them or any other chicken from fast food places.

Yep Babydoll- and just to kind of reiterate what you said- for instance, if someone says they got food poisoning (or think they did) from a chicken fajita from Chili's (or insert any other chain restaurant)- That can make people go 'ewwww- I'm never going to eat there, or order that AGAIN'. Or if someone has gone there recently, they may now be worried that they will get sick.
BUT- even though the restaurant may be run as a chain, it doesn't mean that every chain follows/does not follow health protocols or is unsafe. Or even that, that particular restaurant in unsafe, as there is always the possibility for fluke cases, or that one staff member (who may not even be there anymore) to have made a mistake.
It may end up causing more people to worry orpractice avoidancewhen they may in fact be in no danger.

EDITED TO ADD: Man, do I type slow or something? Everytime I write a reply, more always seem to pop up before I'm done!
Kelly- how many people eat McNuggets everyday and are completely fine? I'm definitely not telling you what you should or shouldn't eat, because as a vegetarian I know how annoying that is. BUT, I think it's probably logical to assume that food poisoning from McNuggets are probably the grossexception as opposed to the norm. Think about how much it would have made the news if it was commonplace!
I just don't want people who are already anxious about eating things that may make them sick to get MORE anxious, even though other people's experiences in other areas of the world may not be generalizeable to them.Edited by: crimgoddess

I have to back up babydoll and amber on this. What is the point to this question? Maybe you can handle the answer but I know others who can't and who are likely to read this and then panic with what they eat later. Is there a constructive point to the question? I'm not getting at you but I personally don't want to read the answers to this thread (but have to as a mod) and I'll bet I'm not the only one,
xxxx

BABYDOLL~~~~
I'm not being snappy, believe me, but I did post this thread to get the answers, prepared to hear what everyone has to say. I will use my best judgement on which places to avoid, which I've done in the past after hearing about FP cases. I just thought it'd be interesting to hear about particular restaurants, especially if there's a repeat-offender. There are already some places I will not eat at, and some that I will eat at, but only limited menu items. I just like to know this stuff, but can't ask people on the streets
So, I ask you guys, knowing I can get honesty and understanding. People have me totally wrong---I just trust opinions of people here, which is a compliment to all, so I feel comfortable getting your opinions. I am not a bad person, I am scared, worried, and like everyone else here.
~*~Charlene~*~
I belive you were snappy with me, but I'm not one to dwell on things when I can offer some constructive criticim. This is advice, take it or leave it, but don't think that I'm against you in any way.
I'm glad you trust everyone on the board, but I've said it once, and I'll say it again, People on the board have the BEST intentions, no doubt, however its kind of like the blind leading the blind in reality. I say this because its like a chain effect - one person says a food is bad, the next person decides that maybe she shouldn't eat it.. etc, exaclty like amber's example.
then where have you gotten? a bunch of new things you can do to aviod the phobia, which temporarily may help provide you with some relief, but the long term effects only help create a notion that vomit should be avioded at all costs.

But phobia or not, wouldn't people wanna be alerted to some questionable food? Our newspaper here has a report every week on restaurant violations. I think the general public likes to know these things as well. It's just another way of protecting ourselves and our kids, without really being paranoid.
~*~Charlene~*~
But 'questionable' food in your particular area of the world is probably not at all related to most everyone else's, even though the restaurant chains may be the same or similar. That, and unless the person actually went to the doctor and got tested, they may not even know definitivelythat it was the restaurant that madethem sick (or that it was even food poisoning).
Even health code violations even only really apply to that particular restaurant at that particular point in time.
If we all lived in the same place, and there was actual substantiation of more than one case from the same location, that would be one thing. I just think that no one really has anything to gain from this, especially when the end result will probably be worrying people that this information doesn't really affect or apply to.

I was wondering for my own knowledge. That's why I wrote "definite" case in the 1st post. I just wanna know for my own curiosity. Other people can choose not to read the answers if it bothers tham, and I totally respect that. Why have my last 3 posts been basically attacked, and by the same people? What's going on? I don't mean any harm but I'm beginning to feel like an a**hole here.
~*~Charlene~*~
I 'believe' I got food poisoning from chicken at Cracker Barrell. I know quite a few friends who have gotten sick from eating chicken there. Mine was in Missouri and theirs were in Ohio. Same resturant.. and from eating bird![]()
I have a friend who knows for sure (from his doc) that he had bad, bad food poisoning from Joe's Crab Shack. I also have a friend who definitely had fp from a burger at Red Robin.
And I did not witness anyone getting snappy and posts like this don't bother me a bit. (just to add my 2 cents) I still eat chicken when I go out. I am a rational person who realizes that food poisoning can happen anywhere.. even my own kitchen. But, it would be interesting to know if across the whole country lots of people had problems with one place. I think that would actually be beneficial.
When you think of it, this is no different from conversation that you might have with non emets. You always hear people saying.. "Dude, don't EVER eat there". But, some people here do tend to be kinda sensitive. I dunno..
\"This too shall pass\"
I know my friend DEFINATELY had food poisoning once. He knew cause he went to a doctor and got tested for it. (Eww stool samples NARSTY LoL I hope I never have to give one) Anyway he got sick because of something with a big long ass name that I can't remember but it comes from fecal matter. Not that there was an actual TURD in his food but like it was because someone went to the bathroom and didn't wash their hands properly and then handled the burger. I'm not sure WHAT resturant he got this from but I know it was from a burger and I know that it had something to do with fecal matter or something from the intestines or something being in his food.
Further more I would like to say that none of these posts were snappy. I actually know of another guy who got food poisoning from sushi (I don't know what resturant but this was YEARS and YEARS ago) I still eat sushi...not from ANYWHERE I'll eat it from the two places that I trust but nowhere else. I don't think it's wrong that you asked this question, as you can plainly see I've known two people with FP and I still eat rather normally...well as normal as an emet can be expected.

I really don't see anything wrong with posting this. Some people are just curious about the topic/subject. If you feel uncomfortable reading this, then you don't have to. It might bother some, but it may not bother others. Anyway, my husband got food poisoning from Wendy's, and I continue to eat there b/c I like their food.
Shiva: It would be interesting/beneficial to know if there are really bad restaurants out there. This post doesn't bother me either b/c I know that I can get food poisoning anywhere even a 5 star restaurant. **Even from the kitchen**

I know 2 people who got food poisoning from Taco Bell. I'm not sure what they ate from there, but both definitely had food poisoning. I wouldn't eat there for a long time, but I guess I've gotten more brave and I do eat there occasionally now.
I work in the health department and have a really good friend who is a health inspector for our restaurants. We see food poisoning cases come through all of the time from fast food restaurants as well as really nice restaurants. If we chose not to eat at a restaurant because 1 person got food poisoning there, we would NEVER eat out!

WOW--thank you for your input, very interesting to read all your replies!! Thanks so much!!!!I find this very interesting and beneficial.

My husband got food poisoning from Taco Bell once. It wasn't confirmed, though, so I guess it could have been coincidence.
A guy I work with just recently was confirmed to have Salmonella (about 3 weeks ago). The doctor tried to get him to remember where he ate, and all he could come up with was Chipotle. Of course, he could be discounting something he ate at home, but he said Chipotle was the only place he ate out at before he got sick.
I guess it is hard to really say for sure if either of these cases were from a restaurant.
My boyfriend's dad told me last week that he thinks he got sick from
eating at Carl's Jr.

This question can definitely have two opinions to it, so I understand both sides. I am the type of person who wants to know the details. But I also know that this can be bad for me. Already after reading all the posts, I am deciding in my head whether to go to some of these places!!!But if we can answer a question, I guess we should try....</font>
I ate at macdonalds one night, I had chicken nuggets and got salmonella from them. Someone must've forgot to wash their hands or it wasn't cooked enough.
We had a confirmed outbreak of e coli at a Wendy's restaurant in my area several
years back. I ate there the week it occurred. But here's the
interesting point--it wasn't the hamburgers that made people sick, it
was the baked potatoes! So even if we ARE at a restaurant during a FP
outbreak, there's a really good chance we won't get sick at all. I
didn't. I hope this reassures some of you, because I do my share of
worrying when I go out to eat in restaurants.

I remember one of my friend's telling me about baked potatoes (she has studied food preparation and hygiene in depth). Problems occur when you don't wash your potato. She said some people don't bother washing them before baking as they think the hot oven will kill any germs/bacteria on the skin, but the temperature doesn't get hot enough for that. I eat baked potatoes all the time, but always give them a good rinse and wipe under the cold tap before baking and have never had any problems.

my (now ex-) bf got fp from a dodgy chinese restaurant somewhere (he travelling for work at the time, sofortunately I wasn't with him when it happened) . He was sort-of alright the next day, and his customers told him that that particular place was known to be dodgy (would have been nice to know *before*)..but anyway.
All the same, I too am interested in this question, but was afraid to ask - not for fear of hearing other's experiences, but isn't there legal implications (potential defamation, etc) by posting actual names? But thankyou to everyone who has answered, even though I am 'down under' (i.e. Australia) it is interesting to hear.
Jay Rough I thought you said the police looked into that case of FP and discovered the cause?
Blah See I really didn't want to know about the baked potatoes, I'm one of those people I hear a thing and it sticks in my anxious mind, my diet is restricted as it is. What is it they say about ignorance being bliss? And yes I have to read this topic as a mod I have to read every topic.
Be courageous, believe in yourself, and be the best woman you can be. I'm with you all the way.
Hippychick, try not to worryabout baked potatoes, I think it is extremely rare to get ill from them as anyone with any common sense would wash the potato before cooking and it's also easy to see when a potato isn't edible, eg if it is all soft and brown or has turned green.
