I decided a few months ago that I was NOT going to let emet stand in my way of having fun. So, I told hubby I wanted to go to Cancun on our vacation this year. This is a HUGE step for me since I have never desired to go to Mexico due to the fear of getting sick from the food/water. I am also pretty scared of flying due to my emet.

So, we booked the trip today and are going on August 3-11. I am so excited! I discussed my food/water fears with the travel agent who doesn't think I have anything to worry about. We are staying at a resort that has 12 restaurants--several of them are "American". Of course, I'm still going to stay away from any meat and I'll only drink bottled water to be on the safe side.

The plane trip will take about 2 and a half hours from where I live, so that isn't too terribly long to be in the air. I have flown from NC to Florida, which wasn't all that bad. I will be taking some Ativan or Phenergan before I get on the plane to be on the safe side. I plan to have my headphones and some music to drown out any noise. So, I think I will be OK. I will probably be so excited that nothing else will matter.

I was wondering if any one had Cancun experiences they would like to share. I was also wondering if anyone here had flown Vacation Express--which is the airline owned by the resorts?

    Jess-

I've been to Cancun twice and Cabo once, and my parents go to either Cancun or Cozumel every year. You are going to love it! It is so beautiful and there is so much to do! I'm so jealous! Definitely stick with bottled water just to be safe, we even brush our teeth with it so we've never had a problem. You'll probably be too preoccupied and having too much fun to even worry about that! Where are you staying? We stayin the Omni villas when we go, which is right on the beach so it's absolutely beautiful. If you like to swim, go snorkeling! I was a nervous wreck at first because I'm pretty spastic in the water (lol) but it's unbelievable! Go to Senor Frogs while you're there! There's also so many cute little boutiques to shop in! Ah I am so jealous. You are going to have the time of your life!!

I'm soooo jealous!! Mexico is awesome. My husband and I went to Mayan Riviera for our honeymoon in September. I didn't want to leave!! The resort we stayed at had all purified water, but just to be safe, I didn't drink any. Plus they gave us TONS of bottled water everyday in our room. You are going to havea great time!!

Congrats on the trip. Remember DON'T drink the water, no ice cubes, coffee nothing, buy bottled water from the states if you can! Kim

Hey Jess! You're going to LOOOVE Cancun. I went there in '99, when I was 19. I suffered from emet a lot even then, but I'm telling you, it was so great there it seemed to wash most of my worries away. You're not going to believe how humid it is when you get off the plane. The airport is open-air in some parts, as are some shopping areas in the city. The water is so pristine- they rake it every day to keep seaweed and other debris out of the swimming area. Everything is fresh and warm and tropical and beautiful. I know you can ease your fears if you let yourself get into the beauty of the place!

When I went I used bottled water for brushing my teeth and drinking, but I ate anywhere and everywhere that looked remotely safe. To be honest, I had d* one day out of the 8 I was there- but that could be because I ate 30 pounds of Mexican food and a dozen margaritas the instant I got within site of the hotel zone (lol!). And I never felt sick. The water in Cancun is pretty safe overall, so you don't need to worry about bathing in it, etc., but I would buy bottled water (local or imported) to drink or brush your teeth just in case.

It may also make you feel better to know that I wasn't careful at all about eating there and had no problem. My friend and I even left the tourist zone and wandered around Cancun city and Keuhic (sp?), the flea market area, and ate what the locals ate. We ate at a Yucatan restaurant called Los Almendros and drank tequila like crazy at any little palapa hut we came across. I got sunburned over half my body, snorkeled, cut my leg on coral off Isla Mujeres, swam with sharks, rode the bus every day, ate food from the local market, got drunk, and kissed a nice man I met at a salsa bar!! All this, and I never had any problem. You'll LOVE IT. And you'll be fine! The more you relax and enjoy the better time you'll have! Be sure to bring an underwater camera! And if you speak any Spanish at all, even attempting in and making a fool of yourself will really endear you to the people there since they're used to being "expected" to speak English.

I hope you have a fabulous trip!!

Thanks everyone! I'm getting really excited although it is still like 16 weeks away!

We are staying at the Moon Palace on the Riviera Maya. I have been looking at their website a lot and it looks wonderful. We have several tours to choose from that are included in our all-inclusive package. My husband wants to parasail and I want to swim with dolphins! We definitely plan to do some snorkeling, too. I have never snorkeled before but I guess I'll learn soon enough! I'm slightly worried about the bus/boat tours due to emet reasons, but I am not going to let that stand in my way of having a good time.

Kate--I can't wait to hear about your Aruba trip!

    Jess
