Well, since my plans got kiboshed, I basically spent the night channel surfing while sipping on diet coke and amaretto (tastes like Dr. Pepper- highly recommended). Inevitably, I ended up at the Miss USA program- and like a bad car wreck, I had to watch.
Well, I do believe it has made me dumber. So, I saw women with fake smiles parade around in badly-designed black dresses, hideous evening gowns, etc. I think a strategic shower break spared me the bathingsuit competition.
I can't BELIEVE that these friggin' contests are still going on and are televised- what message does this send to young girls- that your self worth should be directly related to how good you look in a bathingsuit? Oh, sorry, they aren't "beauty" contests, they are "scholarship competitions".....RIIIIIIGHT. Then why is no one on the program bigger than a size 6? And how does what they look like in a bathingsuit/evening gownhave any bearing as to their work ethic, intelligence, and personality?
And the big, scary question period....oohhhh!! The questions were SO TOUGH! My favourite was "what can men learn from women?"- The response was pretty much the most vapid thing I have heard ina loooong time."Women are strong- look at these heels" Wearing high heels? That's empowerment? Gawd Miss Georgia, wearing heels and looking pretty isn't what it means to be a 'stong empowered woman'. It was fun, however, watching Miss Florida choke on her question relating to political correctness.
I think Pink's video for "stupid girls" should have a spoofon beauty pageants- definitely fits in with the mentality of looks first, everything else secondary.
Just felt like I needed to vent- everytime that I start to think that women are moving ahead and being viewed as more than their component parts, something like this comes around and makes me feel like we've beenset back 20 years.
