Well, since my plans got kiboshed, I basically spent the night channel surfing while sipping on diet coke and amaretto (tastes like Dr. Pepper- highly recommended). Inevitably, I ended up at the Miss USA program- and like a bad car wreck, I had to watch.

Well, I do believe it has made me dumber. So, I saw women with fake smiles parade around in badly-designed black dresses, hideous evening gowns, etc. I think a strategic shower break spared me the bathingsuit competition.

I can't BELIEVE that these friggin' contests are still going on and are televised- what message does this send to young girls- that your self worth should be directly related to how good you look in a bathingsuit? Oh, sorry, they aren't "beauty" contests, they are "scholarship competitions".....RIIIIIIGHT. Then why is no one on the program bigger than a size 6? And how does what they look like in a bathingsuit/evening gownhave any bearing as to their work ethic, intelligence, and personality?

And the big, scary question period....oohhhh!! The questions were SO TOUGH! My favourite was "what can men learn from women?"- The response was pretty much the most vapid thing I have heard ina loooong time."Women are strong- look at these heels" Wearing high heels? That's empowerment? Gawd Miss Georgia, wearing heels and looking pretty isn't what it means to be a 'stong empowered woman'. It was fun, however, watching Miss Florida choke on her question relating to political correctness.

I think Pink's video for "stupid girls" should have a spoofon beauty pageants- definitely fits in with the mentality of looks first, everything else secondary.

Just felt like I needed to vent- everytime that I start to think that women are moving ahead and being viewed as more than their component parts, something like this comes around and makes me feel like we've beenset back 20 years.

I changed the channel when the pageant came on and I went straight to the computer..."Deal or No Deal" was way more exciting than a pageant. This guy on there proposed to his gf on tv! It was so sweet, I was grinning and giggling like I was the one being proposed to.
Proud to be a FIREFIGHTER\'S GIRLFRIEND!!

I hear you on the whole "what kind of message does this send" thing. I used to wishI could look like celebrities and models, but that is impossible! I recently read in one of my magazines to remember that these women are paid to look good. That is their job. Imagine these women trying to do our jobs!

I hear ya loud and clear.

People like my mom are obsessed with these pagents. Imagine what it's like to have a mother with that mentality. Not too easy or fun...

Shiva- I hear ya. My mom was a model. Imagine going through that akward stage where you are a little pudgy and insecure about the fact that you now have boobs....and your mom is flying to Portugal to shoota bathingsuit calendar! Or going to the beach and thinking you look good in your new bathingsuit, and look over and there is mom is a teeny bikini with every guy in a 5 mile radius staring at her. NOT COOL when you're 13, lol. Not to mention being put in modelling yourself, or being told to "suck your stomach in, we're going to meet the editor of <insert magazine>".

Halfoverthefur- to me the whole "they get paid to look good" thing is part of my problem with it. They have a pageant called "Miss USA" or "Miss America", and it insinuates that of ALL the women in America, these are the best and should be the representative for the country. They are viewed as ideals- especially to children. But, the basis of this decision is 95% made on looks, or other shallow things such as ability to 'model' an evening gown or bathingsuit. The whole ideology of it is my problem.

Ugh, I agree! They are so stupid. I feel the same way about a lot of professional athletics too though. It seems like just being intelligent, without being a superstar basketball player or a model, never gets you anywhere in this country.

Yeah, the bathing suit portion is absolutely ridiculous. And I know what you mean about the message that since they are Miss America or USA they are supposed to be representative of what American women should be. My fave rule is that they can't have been married or have kids...WTF?

I feel the same way about People Magazines "most beautiful people" editions. F that!!! I'm sure there are waaaaay more beautiful people in the world than just celebrities. There's no way toknow these are the most beautiful people in the country. I know, I am taking it a bit too literally but it just pisses me off. I'm sorry, but I see girls walking around town every day that are just as beautiful or more beautiful than freakin' Angelina Jolie.

ok, one more rant - Victorias Secret magazines. UGH!!! Those girls are frickin skin and bones, some of them look downright gross. I hate the Victorias Secret people for picking these chicks. Dillholes.

Haha... I watched the Miss USA show too, to see one of the judges, Nicole Linkletter, the girl who won the reality show "America's Next Top Model"... she's from the town I live in and I actually work with her mom so we had to check it out. Anyways, earlier in the week, I asked Nicole's mom how the judges were supposed to judge. I mean, I was quite intrigued by just how a person is to judge another person, naming them the best "standard" americangirl and give them the title. She asked Nicole about this and Nicole said that they were just told it's just their opinion. I found it really odd when I thought about it. I mean, the questions were just bad, and their answers equally as bad. Miss Georgia and her high heels just made me roll my eyes. Come on!!! I realize they're put on the spot, but are we really serious with this? No.

i don't think i've ever watched a beauty pageant in fear of my IQ dropping about a million points. lol. i guess i shouldn't say much about them because i don't really know whether or not they are somehow benefiting society, but from the looks of things, they're just sending out the wrong message to girls everywhere. girls have enough problems! especially these days. soo many celebrities that they look up to weigh about 90 pounds and i think that places a lot of pressure on them to try to look the same if they want to gain the same attention. it's a given that skinny celebs are going to be in the media 24/7, i don't see why it's necessary to add to that stress with beautiful, thin, every day women who show themselves off in gowns and bikinis. i don't know, it's definitely not for me. girls these days need better role models who will show them that it's what's inside that counts!

We have Deal or No deal in the UK too - who is the American presenter that does the show?

Also saw America's Next Top Model - The person I found most annoying was Tyra Banks - URGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHH she's so false. And over the top. Just like she is on her own show. Stop trying to be Oprah missy - it aint gonna happen!

Diet coke and amaretto is gorgeous. For anybody thinking of trying amaretto, if you don't like marzipan I don't think you'll like it. Everyone I know that dislikes marzipan can't stand the taste of amaretto as it's a very similar taste. I love marzipan and anything like... pistachio icecream, Italian amaretti biscuits...
