Hi to everyone,

My first post here, so I hope that this is the right place to put it
in. By way of an introduction; my name is Chris, aged 22 and I'm a
final year history and politics student at the University of Leicester,
UK. And I just can't wait to finish! However, I have been emitophobic
for a long time - it was attempted to be cured through counselling, and
whereas it worked for a while, now sadly I appear to have reverted to
my old ways.

Anyway, onto the real point on this post.

At around 10:00, I made the stupid mistake of opening a yoghurt without
checkingthe sell by date, and then proceeded to lick the lid. At once,
I realised my mistake, and checked the sell by date. It was the 20th
April... a whole 6 days ago. Now I am very furious with a number of
people, including myself for letting something like this happen - but I
am actually scared stiff that it's going to make me very ill. I am
currently drinking pint after pint of water in an attempt to flush the
yoghurt out of my system. However, I think that the worst factor behind
this is the fact that I'm supposed to be going out on a date tonight
with an ex girlfriend of mine, and I really don't want to cancel on
her.

Has anybody else ever done anything stupid like this? I am worried that I will be quite ill in a bit...

Cheers,

Chris

Hi Chris and welcome to the site. I really think you will be ok, you have been drinking a lot of water and you only licked the lid so you didn't really eat that much. If you are really worried then seea localchemist, if they advise it is ok for you, you can getsome motilium 10 tablets, they are anti emetics (they push any food through your digestion quicker so it doesn'thang aroundin any one place for long but they DON'T give you the trots so don't worry about that either!) I'm only saying this as you are going out on an important date and it does give you extra reassurance in your tum!

I hope you feel ok and can go on your date, i know it's easy for me to say it buttry not to worry about it as im sure this will make your tum feel worse.

Take care

Recently at my mother-in-law's, I ate some dip that had expired like 6 MONTHS ago! And I was fine. So I am sure you are fine! In fact, I think most yogurts say to use within one week of the sell by date.

Yeah, cheers for that guys! Very much appreciated. I have to say
that I think that this site is brilliant for all that reassurance that
nobody else seems to understand about! I tried talking it to my Mum and
she just said "Oh well, if you get ill, you get ill!". lol. Not much
help really!!

I think it's probably going to be fine, but it was a shock when I first
looked at the date. I believe I've learnt my lesson and will check in
the future!!!

My brother did that a few days ago, he ate the whole yogurt then relised it was a week over date, and he was totally fine, he was just like oh well lol. Hey Chris,

Firstly, welcome to the site, its great to have you here!

Its sooo weird that you're posting about yoghurt, because i'm waiting for the yoghurt I had in my breakfast to affect me in some way!!

Its not that it was past its expiry, its just that it was the one my bf took to work last week, didnt eat and then left it in our room for 2 days. I put it back in the fridge, and just realised its the one I put on my cereal!

The thing is I didn't post and i'm not too worried, as the only thing that happens with yoghurt is that it goes sour. The worse thing sour yoghurt can do is give you a bit of diarhoea, but really should not make you V*.

Also, yoghurt usually has probiotics/friendly bacteria in it anyway so you should be fine. It it didn't taste sour or look curdled you're probably absolutely fine!!

Hey Chris, welcome.

The date only means that that is when it is the freshest. It doesn't mean that it's expired. You will be fine!!

I've done that a couple of times.. and spoiled milk (my fridge at college SUCKS) and I've been just fine all those times. It is kind of scary, obviously, but I think you'll be great.

And the dates generally mean that's when the store should sell the stuff by.. it's not necessarily an indicator of freshness. I hope you feel better (more relaxed, that is) soon!

My husband just chugged half a glass of rotten milk before he realized it was bad and he was fine. By the way, I am twenty-two also, how long have you dealt with this?

Good morning all, sorry I didn't write back yesterday - I was in the act of moving stuff out to university.

I was absolutly fine in the end, the only comment was that i have had
extreme wind, which may or may not related to this... however, I will
spare anybody any more of the details!!

Swoopes, in response to your question, I believe I have been
emitophobic since I had food poisoning when I was about 5 or 6 years
old. The entire experience haunted me and then I proceeded to go for
the next 9 or 10 years without V* at all. However, since I was 14 or
15, I typically get one sv* a year and potentially one drink realted
v*. It's a shame really as it puts me off doing so many things that I
would love to do - before I started doing aerobatics in light aircraft,
I could not get myself to put the plane into an unusual attitude for
fear of being ill. However, as with everything else, with time and
practice, I got more used to it and now I am fine on aerobatics.
Thankfully...

What about you?
