so for the first time in my life i am trying to diet. lol. i don't really think i have much weight to lose, i weigh 157 and im 5'3'' tall. it's the most i've ever weighed and i think i'd be a lot more comfortable if i lost 10-15 pounds. i went away to college for a semester and i'm going back in august and as a result of being away for just three months, i gained 12 pounds. as i've mentioned here before, i LIVE on cheese. i eat more cheese than probably everyone here combined, and it's so bad for you! i really just want to change my eating habits but not completely deprive myself. can anybody help me out here? any dieting stories? i know this is going to be such a challenge for me. despite my emet, it seems i can eat virtually anything in sight! and i know it'll catch up with me as i get older and my metabolism slows down. what are some good foods to eat, besides the obvious veggies? i like veggies, but i know i'll get tired of them very quickly. is brown rice any good for you? i thought i read somewhere that it was so when my dad went food shopping yesterday i asked him to buy me some. i'm just looking to change my eating habits completely so i don't gain more weight when i go back to college next semester. also, any exercise tips? i am so lazy. i have a gym membership and i actually went yesterday (yay!) and sometimes i run a mile or two on the treadmill that we have here at home, but i get so bored with that. my boyfriend is at the gym every single day for atleast 2 hours and if he doesn't get there, it ruins his whole day. i wish i was more like that! he says he'll help me out but i'm stubborn and i know it will only create arguments. any advice will help! thanks for reading this entire thing

    Blondie,

I am a lot like you. I weigh about 156 and am 5'4" tall. Ideally, I'd like to lose 26 pounds and be at 130, but I'd be happy if I lost 10 or 15. I think 140 is the top range of normal for my height. I don't have many tips, but there's another thread around here somewhere where people are sharing dieting tips, etc. It seems funny to me, because so many emets are underweight! I love cheese, too, and eating in general! I used to go to Weight Watchers and it did work, but I want to be able to do this on my own with diet and exercise. I have been running (I did a 5K race last weekend) and I go to Curves. I just am so bad about eating right! Sorry I don't have any more tips, but I am here for support. Maybe we can check in with each other and see how we are doing!

    Good luck!

    Mary,

I could definitely use some support! My mom tried Weight Watchers for about 6 months and she lost 25 pounds but I think even that will be too structured for me. I don't want to count points, I just want to learn how to eat healthier! As for the running, I give you soooo much credit because that's my least favorite thing to do in the entire world (besides v*ing, lol). In high school we had to do the mile run two times a year and I used to dread that day so much, and it was only a mile! I have a two year gym membership that doesn't expire until next February and I rarely ever go. There's a gym at my college that my friends just got memberships to this semester so I think when I transfer back next semester that will be good to have somebody to go with! We definitely need to keep in touch. You're on my buddy list so update me and let me know how it's going and I'll do the same!

Okay, it's a plan! Do you mean buddy list on here? Or on IM? We should definitely keep in touch about our progress! Where are you from again?

Not to toot my own horn, but I recently lost 20 pounds! In early February, my work started this "Biggest Loser" type challenge and we're all losing weight. It's so great!

My methods that have worked: I was in Weight Watchers a couple years ago and still have some of their materials. So I was counting points. But then I tried just plain eating healthier. I bought the Biggest Loser diet book and it's helpful. But they encourage counting calories, so you may not want to go that route.

Bottom line: eat less calories than you burn and you'll lose weight.

Tips for healthy eating: lots of fruits and veggies. High protein/high fiber meals. Whole grains, instead of white flour or sugar, 3 servings of dairy (low fat cheeses, milk, and yogurt), healthy fats and oils, like those found in nuts and olive oil.

Also, try to find some activity you really enjoy. I love hiking and dh and I try to do it once or twice a week. Also, if you have kids, nieces, nephews, etc. Find time to play with them outside and I guarantee you'll get a great workout!

Best of luck to you future big "losers!"

    Thank you!

Yes, I started my weight loss journey on February 1st. It hasn't been easy, but I love how my clothes fit now. I feel healthier and look a lot better. It's worth it!

Good job, Heather! I hope I can say the same in a few months! And, yes, Blondie, I do eat when I'm bored. A bad habit!
