Has anyone ever had nausea from taking any antibiotics for an infection? If so, what antibiotic were you on?, how many mg a day? How did you survive it?

I just happened to have strep and needed the antibiotics but the moment I took them, 4 - 5 hours later, I felt so much nausea that I couldn't eat. It grew worse each passing day as I took more and more. I even ate a meal with the meds. Is this possible? I remember taking 2000mg of antibiotics before seeing the dentist and that never bothered me before I knew I had emetophobia. Could I have possible invented the nausea myself? What do you all thinK??

Hey, sorry your feeling n* after taking the meds. I think some antibiotics can make you feel a little n* when you first start them as your body isn't used to it and it needs to ajust, when i was on something called risperidone it made me feel a little n* to begin with. Also my brother had manic depression and had to be put on some really strong anti physcotic meds and he felt n*, but never v*. I also had an overdose of Maxalon in hospital once, it was horrible, i mean even though its an antiemetic because i had an overdose i felt n* and i couldn't control my limbs..very weird experience.
TEA!! IS AMAZING!!
indeed it is! :]

hmmm.....I've never taken those before, but I do know that sometimes antibiotics can be really concentrated to help you get well faster, and those can sometimes give you n*. but i don't know if Omnifer is one of those or not.

Well from past experiences with antibiotics they can definately make you nauseas, but you probably won't get sick. I remember in school this girl was taking antibiotics and she didn't eat before taking them and she felt REAL sick because of it. I think taking it with food can help, though make sure to go with what it says on the bottle. Some of them I think they recommend taking with food because it can make you feel real ill otherwise. I'm taking Zithromax right now. 250mg. I usually take it after dinner. It's been bothering my stomach a little, but not too bad. I had d* on Monday, but that was it. I have two pills left to go. Hope you feel better soon. If the n* is really bothering you, I would call the pharmacist and see if they have any suggestions or maybe you need to change antibiotics or you could be allergic too. I did get a yeast infection from these. Yuck. So, now I have to treat that after I'm done taking these.

I've been on AB's like 14 million times. Sometimes they make me a
little queasy, but usually not, and usually it helps if I've eaten
something first. I also try to take probiotics while I'm on
antibiotics, and afterwards for a few days to a week, because it helps
balance out intestinal bacteria that gets killed from the antibiotic as
well, and could give you some d*. I've never v* from
antibiotics. I think the nastiest I've taken was Biaxin for
pneumonia. It left a bitter taste in my mouth ALL THE TIME.
Blech.

Sometimes with medication induced queasies, I've found a Zantac or
antacids help a bit, but make sure you read all the prescribing info,
because some you can't take within however many hours of taking the
anitbiotic . I was on one of
those this winter for my appendix, but I only had to take it once a
day, and it didn't bother my belly (as if anything would anymore at
that point! ha!) though I dont' remember the name of it.

Hi, I always worry when I take antibiotics incase they make me sick. Did the doctor mention any side effects? as my auntie (who is a nurse) said that your doctor ahs to mention a side effect that occurs alot, even if it's on the box. So for instance if a certain antibiotic did make alot of people nauseas he would have to mention it to you before prescribing it. If he didn't mention it it's most probably not very common.

The reason why antibiotics can make people nauseous is because it ends up killing some of the good bacteria in your stomach. In order to replenish this, eat yogurt, or get a supplement (ask your pharmacist- I think they are called something along the lines of acillobifodus? I got some while on meds in australia and they work really well).

The thing you have to remember with antibiotics is to take as directed (with food, not with food, etc), and ALWAYS finish them if that is what your doc told you to do. If not, it can come back worse than before because you didn't really kill it the first time around.

And it IS possible for you to be so worried about the pills that your mind creates the nausea itself- anxiety can do that, and it SUCKS.

Hope all the sick-while-on-meds people feel better soon!

Pumpkin, it's always better to take antibiotics with food or milk. They sometimes cause nausea but only rarely cause vomiting. It's much more common for them to cause diarrhea, because they kill the bacteria that keep your intestines orderly. If you get diarrhea from an antibiotic, don't worry about it, because it's not something that is apt to lead to vomiting. Some suggest eating yogurt after the diarrhea to replace the lost bacteria.

I once had to take antibiotics, and I looked in the drug manual and saw they could cause vomiting, but I really wanted to be free of whatever was wrong with me, so I took them anyway, knowing that I was skilled at fighting nausea if it came to that. I think I only had a little stomach irritation that went away quickly.

I think an emet would be very unlikely to toss up from antibiotics. So don't let your fear keep you from taking something that could help keep you healthy.

Thanks you all but you know. I'm still leary about it all. If I don't see gettin better by tomorrow. I will have to go back and get another shot or something. I'd rather get daily shots. I'm ok with them. I have been probiotics since I started the antibiotics and still taking them along with some yogurt to help increase good bacteria and immune system.

I hope I feel better too. Sorry some of you out there are in a similar situation as myself only with a diff. infec. I'm glad I'm not alone. It's just that the Phenergan wasn't even cutting it for me and the bitter taste of it was making it hard for me to take every hour cuz the effect wouldn't last. I stopped taking it cuz I was afraid I was overdosing as I felt a dry mouth, metallic taste etc.

does anyone know if I have some leftover antibiotic and If I swish and gargle with it, would that help the blisters go away since they come into direct contact with the med? Or does it really have to be ingested? Who knows out there? Give me a response.

oral antibiotics aren't "topical" - they won't help your mouth that way. They get activated in your bloodstream.

Acidophilus, bifidus and lactobicilus are needed to take with them so they don't destroy the good bacteria in your gi tract and make you nauseous. Other than that, it's probably anxiety only that leads to the nausea. Remember that an infection in the body has far more chance of making you sick than an antibiotic! (Take them......)

Thanks sage. I am already on a probiotic with those particular flora. Just had another injection yesterday of 250 mg of more Rocephin and now on a low kiddie dose of 200 mg. of zithromax for the next 5 days. I expect this to work for the remaining stubborn bacteria.
