Hey everyone. I made it through my surgery. But I was wondering if it is normal to have diarrhea after surgery. Have any of you experienced this? I had no vomiting at all, but yesterday I did feel nauseous, and if I start to panic now, I'll be nauseous! Please help!

Glad you made it through, what did you have done? If it's anything intestinal/gall bladder, then it would not be unusual to have d*

Or it could be something completely unrelated. How often have you been? If you're feeling fine generally but just have a bit of looseness, then it's nothing horrible, just one of those things.Edited by: suze

I had an ovary removed. I actually had an "accident" in bed and I have horrible gurgly, gassy sounds and feelings.

Well, your insides have been messed about, they probably would have had to mess about with the intestines to get to the ovary, although I have no anatomical knowledge. They're in the same area though. I think it's probably to do with the op itself, rather than the anesthesia, but try and relax. As I said, if you feel fine generally, then it's nothing to worry about. Just keep your fluids up.

After I had my major sugery I was quite consipated because they filled my stomach and instestines up with air, and it was very uncomfortable and hard to go to the bathroom. But after this last surgery I am having the same problem you are. I will go to sleep, then wake up and literally run to the bathroom and have major d*. I never had this before either. After 5 surgeries, this is the only one to make me feel that way. I'm not really worried about it though, I just have been watching what I eat, and taking it easy and letting the d* run its course. I honestly think its from the medication they gave me at the hospital or from my pain meds or antibiotics. I wouldn't worry about it though, I'm going through the same thing! But I am glad to hear everything went all right. It wasn't as bad as you thought, or was it? Feel better soon.

I had an ovary removed when I had an ruptured ectopic & I suffered from very bad wind & windy stabbing pains afterwards *due to the fact they pump you up with air* I didn't have d* though as the painkillers they gave me bunged me up not good trying to push out a no. 2 with lots ofstitches across the pubic hairline The anitibiotics they gave me on the way home worked a treat afterwards though & I had an 'accident' myself

Try not to worry too much about it - its probably all beacuse of the medicines they have given you... & hope you feel well again soon

I didn't have a laparoscopy where they pump you with air. I had a laparotomy. I have a call into the doctor now. I feel awful.

I dont know for sure, but I think that they still pump you full of air regardless of whether you are having a laproscopic procedure, or if you are actually cut. It just seems that when I had an ovary removed, and they cut me along my bikini line, that they still filled my belly with air, so that they could move around better in there and make sure I didnt have an cysts, or growths on my intestines, ect .......

As for the diarrhea you are having, I would think that I could be from the meds you have been on. Antibiotics can give you bad diarrhea. I wish I could remember if I had diarrhea after my surgery, but thats been 11 yrs ago. I am glad you have a call into the doctor, please let us know what he/she says. I hope you get to feeling better soon!!!!

Well the doctor said it could be IBS ora little GI virus! Just what I wanted to hear. I only got antibiotics before my surgery, so I'm only taking ibuprofen now. I'll keep you posted.

I am sorry to hear you are feeling bad after surgery....i wonder if the anethesia they gave you could be causing the d....you know getting out of your system? I don't know, i've never had that after surgery before. You just never know where that mess comes from really. I do hope that you will be feeling better soon though, i know how miserable you must be especially after being nervous about the surgery to begin with. Feel better soon

Half -

Glad your surgery went well. I actually did have d* for almost a full week after my cyst removal in March. When I called my doc - she told me to take a dose of Immodium AD, which helped. Let us know what the doctor said.

Well, my incision started bleeding today, so I had to go to the doctor's. They listened to my "bowel sounds" and said they sounded normal. They think by IBS is the problem now. I had never taken Ativan until the last few days, but I think it even seems to calm down my bowels. My heart rate in the hospital was 136! Today at the doctor's it was 80. I just hope I don't become dependent on Ativan now.

I had the most awful d* after my surgery this winter, but it was a
reaction from the contrast I had to drink for the catscan. Then I
had to do it AGAIN 5 days after the surgery, having not eaten in 6 days
then, and it went right through me. It was really horrible.
Did clear up with time though.

Honestly though, I'd suspect in your case, it is just stress from
having gone through the whole experience. For me and my IBS,
stress = d*, and surgery = STRESS!!!!!!!!

If it is IBS then I say better out than in, when my mum had a hysterectmy she became so bunged up that a week later she had to go back into hospital and it wasn't a fun time at all, she was in pain from her stitches and everything. Get well soon babe.

I think my diarrhea may have been from all the ibuprofen I was taking, too. I tried just sticking with Tylenol yesterday. Then in the middle of the night I took ibuprofren again, and this morning I had some diarrhea, but not nearly as bad as I had been having. I'm hungry now, but I'm kind of afraid to eat. Now I'm going to worry about having a small bowel obstruction, which can happen after surgery. Does anyone know how common these are?
