Take a look at this news item and see who has the germiest work environment. I know this will be of interest to some IES members:

I think I could have told you about teachers! I am one and more germs
walk through my door than I care to know about! I sometimes put a
heavy duty air purifier in my room and run the 6 hour sanitizer to try to
    kill off the germs. YUCK!

I'm a teacher, so I do a few things to make sure I'm not the germiest.

I prop my door open so kids don't have to touch it when they come in and out of my classroom.

I use clorox wipes on my desk, phone, keyboard and mouse at least once a week.

I'm a band director, so I buy lots of mouthpiece "sanitizer" and make the kids use it all the time on their instruments.

I also have a small bathroom near my classroom that I use, and I personally spray bleach on the toilet/sink pretty often

I always have hand sanitizer on my desk and use it often.

RESULT: I't's been a great school year. I have only missed work one day this school year due to personal illness and it was for severe period pain.

    bravo to you, bandnerd!

i bet my workplace is pretty nasty - i work at the YMCA, so basically, a gym, plus daycare, plus we are oneof the last Y's in america to keep residents, aka, alcoholics & recovering drug addicts. we also have CA meetings (coke addicts) & AA & numerous other things going on all the time.

not that that means i've got more work germs than anyone else, but i have got a pretty wide variety of people passing through the doors :P

I work in a retail store photo lab and we share a computer. I am always concerned about what I am picking up off of this thing. ick. We also share phones, but I try to avoid answering the phones at work. (not really my job, so it's no big deal). My other job is photographing the newborns in the hospital. I was pretty confident that this work environment was clean, but I do have to pass through the emergency room on my way up to the maternity ward AND I use the same stairwell as the doctors. (ick) Probably my least 'dangerous' job as far as germs go is doing freelance photography, or when I work under the table from home for a real estate agent. When I am doing photography, it's landscape, and well, the work at home issue is self explanatory : )

Man, I think I am going to school to be an elementary school guidance counselor. I hope their work environment isn't as 'germy' as a teachers!

I'm an elementary school music teacher, so I knew I had a germy job! I think your immune system gets used to it, though, as I have never been one to get sick very often at all!

    Mary,
That is what I hear. So, you don't get colds or anything very often? When you first started working as a teacher were you sick often?

yeah i would of thought schools, if you think about it then it is the most unhyginic places, because of the lack of cleaners, plus half the time their students.

if you think about it then hospitals are cleaned so much, same with any other type of medical proffession, because it is so clinical. and accountants, they have to see the general public, and have the same problems as school. anything like that will have alot of germs, it is becuase of all of the contact that is made!

    Shiva,

Nope, I generally don't get even colds very often. That said, I am just getting over one now, but it was very small, and my bf got it a lot worse. I don't even think I got sick that often when I first started teaching, either. It was awhile ago now, so I don't quite remember. I think I have a pretty strong immune system.

I work in a kennel so I'm pretty sure that I'm right up there with garbage collectors and people who install septic tanks.

I used to work in a veterinaty hospital, cleaning and doing some assisting with procedures. Somehow the germs there didn't bother me as much, because most were from the animals, and not as many are communicable to humans. I would get all kinds of gross things on me from the animals, and just wash off when I got home, and not give it another thought. I would freak if the same stuff from humans got on me, tho.

Yeah, I feel the same way. If this were a clinic for people I would have never even considered applying for the job, muchless actually accepting it.

I think I may have the germiest workplace, but then I suppose it is a
bit of a cheat because it is a lab. We have stocks of and
regularly use Norovirus, Salmonella, Campylobacter, Hepatitis A, E Coli
0157 and several others, and they are probably on a lot of surfaces
    where they shouldn't be.
So either our hand washing is good or we have all built up some sort of
resistance as we are very rarley sick with the things we play with in
    the lab.

Yeah, it's fun, but hard work. You never really think of working at a vet's office as being physical labor, but it definetly is. Especially restraining the animals. On the bright side, though, at least I don't have to worry about working out so much.

You know honestly, I did wait until my emet had recovered a litte (and emphasize the litte there) before considering the job, but so far I've had no problems. I used to get panicy at the slightest of bad smells because it would you know make me slightly n*, and since I was so aware of it I'd panic and think it meant I'd actually v*. However, have a lot of nasty, smelly things to clean up and use powerful, choaking chemicals to clean them up without even feeling slightly queasy.

I haven't had to clean up any v* yet so I guess we'll just see how I do the first time it happens (I know it will eventually).

I'm a housekeeper, I clean about 20 houses a week, on average. I have to clean houses where people have had sv's(I get so upset when they don't cancel and don't tell us until we're already there so we can't refuse), I have to clean dirty toilets, sinks, bathroom sinks and faucets, fold bacteria-filled towels, etc. I figured this would be on the list, but maybe the fact that the rags we use are so full of disinfectant and cleaning product that it kills the bugs, I don't know! I don't often wear gloves because I find that I can't get a good grip on the sponges and cloths, but I always wash my hands before I eat or put my hands near my mouth for any other reason, and luckily, I've been there a year now and I haven't picked up any sv's so far!
