Can anyone give me some home remedies for this, i wont take tablets as they make me feel sick. No remedies...you will need to get to the dentist. I had cracked my tooth (how I don't know) and it was super infected! It hurt to drink, eat, chew gum, even suck air into my mouth! You will need antibiotics...and I had to get 3 root canals done to relieve all the pressure. Was in terrible pain!

As scary as it may be....you have to go to the dentist......i had the same thing happen to me, and i waited and waited, and eventually they had to just pull it out b/c it was too far gone...not to mention the immense pain i went through...all for nothing. You need an antibiotic to kill off the infection....which IS going to make you sick if you don't do something about it now. I am terrified of the dentist and I am almot 40 yrs old....so i know what you are going through. It happened to me twice. I had to have 2 pulled out and it sucked. Believe me, a root canal is not that bad. It didn't even hurt me at all....i swear...the pulling the tooth out hurt way worse. Please go to the dentist and get this taken care of soon. The longer you wait, the worse you are going to feel. Really

You absolutely HAVE to go to the dentist. The infection can spread, and
if left long enough can really do some harm. My friend almost lost his
jawbone because he refused to go to the dentist, and the infection spread
to his jawbone. He ended up being hospitalized. This is not something
to mess around with. I'm not trying to scare you to death, but you need
to get it taken care of. Home remedies are not going to work.

    Hey Suzy,

Well i can relate to you 100% - I have had a broken off tooth (the one just in front of my top wisdom) for about a year now, and I absolutely refuse to go to the dentist! (I haven't even registered with one or been to one since i've lived in the UK - thats 5 years!) I used to go regularly when I lived in SA, I've had braces, a plate, and fillings in the past, but I am just petrified now! Its the fact that I may V* in the dentists chair that scares me more than the pain. Also scared that i'll panic and make it an ordeal for myself!

My wisdom tooth has broken off at the top closest to my gum and I can feel a big hole there, but I would rather have that than have them pulled!

The only TEMPORARY home remedies I can think of is to gargle or rub some brandy/alcohol onto the gum area.. or bite down on a clove, (I think its a clove).. Try paracetamol too for the temperature too! But as much as I can relate... yours sounds pretty serious if its got infected, I would try and get a friend or someoneto come with you and go to the dentist asap!

Get them to give you drugs at the dentist to calm you down. Good luck!

I'm going to agree with everyone else, go to the dentist. Fear of the dentist is not uncommon so make surethe dentist knows about it. My Mother has a fear of the dentist and they give her the nitrous oxide gas to keep her calm.

Thanx everyone, I have a dental abcess and tha doctor put me on antibiotics, i took my first dose at 6pm. Where I live in West Yorkshire you cant get a dentist for love nor money so even if I was brave enough to go the nhs cannot cater for me even if i was in agony they would just advise me to try and find a dentist even though they know there isnt any who are taking on newpatients as for emergency dentists you have to wait about 3 weeks to have a tooth pulled. Its shocking the state of nhs dentists also the private dentists are full up. So I have to endure this pain anyway.

At least you got the antibiotics. But please do try to get in as soon as you can (even if its 3 weeks). My teeth have been so much trouble and such a mess, I wouldn't wish it on anyone and all because I was scared to go for so long, I've had 5 (I think) root canals, 2 ended up having to be redone, one ended up being pulled, I had anotehr need to be pulled (that never got the root canal) and all because I never went when it first started. Now I'm almost back in shape but it's taken a while and I'd hate to see you go thru even part of that. What helped w/ me during all my dental agony was ice packs I'd make and hold to my cheek (wrapped in a towel of course). Also I lived off of Advil and Oragel....um I can't think of much else. Anyhow good luck and I hope you get in soon!

I do feel for you. I have had tooth abscesses and the pain is awful. I go to the dentist regularly so was able to get treatment straight away, the dentist prescribed anti-biotics and extra strong painkillers as normal ones (even double the dose) didn't touch the pain, then I either had the tooth extracted after the course of antibiotics had ended or if the nerve had died (the abscess can sometimes cause this) had the nerve removed and a root filling.

Try not to worry about going to the dentist. Dentists are very understanding and see a lot of nervous patients so help in any way they can. I made my fiance register with my dentist as he'd not been for about 22 years and I said you never know when you might need to see one in an emergency. His last experience of the dentistwas not nice and he felt lots of pain, so he was understandably uncomfortable aout going again. Anyway he went, had two fillings (amazing he only needed two fillings after 22years!)and said he never felt a thing. He can't believe how different it is to when he used to go when he was a teenager.

Good luck with finding a dentist, I know how hard it is.

Well, one home remedy I've tried when I' ve had a toothache, not necessarily as serious as abcess but still this may help. I have used vanilla extract on an absorbed Q-tip and leave it on the gums surrounding your tooth for a few seconds as the dentist would with lidocaine. It has helped to relieve my pains but my pains were mild not like yours that sounds overwhelming. This might not work at this point but oh well. I'm sorry you don't feel well. You will need thoe antibiotics for sure before they can work on you and don't wait to tell your dentist how nervous and anxious your are. They will all give you either xanax, lithium or valium more commonly for that moment. You can even try them before you go so you know which one works to calm you and then you can use it right before your procedure. I always use xanax even for teeth cleanings and tooth fillings which I hate with a passion. I'd rather see my OBGYN a million times over than see a dentist,,,,ugh, I hate it. I hope you feel better.

I had an abscess about 1.5years ago. It was a nightmare because I was in so much pain. Luckily I was able to get the tooth pulled (couldn't afford a crown) and was able to get the situation taken care of, but it was frightening. For me, the pain I experienced during everything was the worst because of my neurological pain disorder (which caused complications).

Taking the antibiotics right now are a matter of life and death for you. Waiting 3 weeks to get it pulled is a long time, so if you don't take the antibiotics - you could get deathly-deathly-deathly ill here.

Now is not the time to even be worrying about emet because THIS is really a matter of LIFE AND DEATH! Seriously... a tooth abscess can spread to the brain or the blood stream. You have to take the medicine no matter how sick you become. I know emets say they would rather die than V*, but think rationally because now you are really faced with a situation that could kill you if you don't follow the doctors orders.

I'm not trying to scare you - I'm telling you the truth. I am emet and I hate dentists, but the dentist that treated me literally told me that I could not wait to see my family dentist (I was away at college when I had the abscess) because he told me I would probably not be alive in 6 weeks! I had to get it treated immediately because the situation would become life and death. Needless to say, I was given an appointment within a week and I had to rearrange other scheduled things so I could get this matter taken care of.

My professors and friends were really supportive and helped me get through the difficult time. I was so scared and in so much pain - but I never did V*, despite complications. I got called "chimpmunk face" and other silly things because I was so swollen, but mashed potatoes were my friend
