Next Friday I'm having surgery. I will be under a local anesthesia with sedation. The dr. said that this type of anesthesiahas much fewer cases of nausea and vomiting than general and they can put something in theIV to prevent it.I've never been under anesthesia before so I dont' know how I reactto it.

I will then be on pain killers which can also cause nausea. It's been years since I was on pain killers but I have neverhad nausea from them before and I'm hoping it doesn't cause it this time either. I'm prepared with ginger ale, crackers and broths just in case.

You can tell I'm emetophobicbecauseI'm more scared of the nausea and vomiting from the drugs than I am from the surgery itself.

Anyone have any experienceand tips on how to handle this?

    Hey Centipede -

Ask them to put an anit-emetic (Zofran is a good one) into your IV before the surgery starts and after. This is what I had with my surgery in March, and not one bit of n*. They can also give you an anti-emetic to take home in pill form so the pain meds won't make you feel bad (Zofran or Phenegren). I wouldn't take a chance with it - just tell them you are worried about it and they should take care of it with no problems.

    Good luck with your surger!

I've been under and it went well, no n*. Kind of a nice nap actually.

I had surgery in August and was terrified of anestheia. My mom had always had problems when she had surgery. I kept asking the doctor and nurses if I would v*. They let my fiance come back with me to calm me down. I barely remember waking up and I slept for like 6 hours after it. I never got sick!!! The doctors gave me meds to help and they were amazing. One of the better experiences with a doctor.
