Has anyone had this done? My doctor is sending me for an abdomnial CAT scan with contrast--I am terrified. Does it cause v*? If so, I don't think I can do it.

I had an abdominal/pelvic CT scan with contrast just a few months ago. I had to drink contrast and have an injection of it. I had absolutely no problems at all.
I had it done about 1 month ago, the injection was fine. The only problem I had was drinking the contrast. I was n* to begin with so having to drink 3 very large bottles of it, the n* got worse. I told them that I thought I would v* if they made me drink anymore. I was able to get the first 2 down, but only a small portion of the 3rd. The techinician said what I had drank was sufficient. Good luck with the test.

Babygap,
Did you have to drink the thick stuff, or was it mixed with Tang? Mine was mixed with Tang, and it didn't make me feel sick at all.
I had to drink the thick stuff. The lable said it was a banana smoothie flavor, but it was awful. It had a banana chemical taste to it and it was like drinking a milkshake. I had to drink the first 2 in 1 hour, then wait for 2 hours for the contrast to get to the lower intestine. Then, I had to drink the 3rd one so they could see my stomach and small intestine. It was that 3rd one where I felt really sick. I told them if I get sick from it, I wasn't going to do the test. The tech told me that what I drank of the 3rd one was enough to complete the test. The IV contrast was nothing at all. It was a little shot of iodine that made me feel very warm all over for about 20 seconds.

I know two people who had abdominal CT scans and had to drink the barium drink for it.
They told me that it doesn't taste very good, but that's really the only problem.
I've been with loads of people in the hospital who are very very sick to start with, then have to drink this or have these tests. They all feel pretty gross, but I've never seen anyone vomit from it - believe it or not. And again, I'm talking about very sick people, not outpatients.

I've had it done twice, and both times I asked for an anti-emetic before starting the test. The first time I drank it, I went really slow...one cup every 15 minutes or so...the next time I had to drink it I downed two big cups in like 20 minutes...that was a mistake. I didn't V* from it but I did get REALLY nauseous. I'm an idiot thinking that the faster I drink it, the faster they will do the test...LoL I found out that wasn't true. The injection stuff makes you feel all warm and with me it left a metallic taste in my mouth for a while but it won't make you V*.
