The other day my mom was talking to me about how messy my apartment was (It wasn't that messy but I am a slob) My mom was blowing it all out of proportion and said that it would make me sick to live like that. I said, "I've been living here for a year and a half and how manytimes did I get sick?" and she was like, "You're always feeling bad" and I'm like, "That's because I have stomach problems and you know it. What I mean is, how many times have I had a fever or thrown up?" and she looked at me and said, "You don't throw up" LoL...I just thought that was interesting for her to say. I mean she knows about my emet but I don't know if she knows the extreme things I go through NOT to throw up. I mean she's never around when I get really nauseous...but I haven't thrown up in about 6 years *knock on wood* maybe that's what she noticed. Anyone else think this is weird for her to say?

Not at all, Monica. The average person throws up quite a lot, by emet standards. At least once, probably twicea year. I recently did an online survey on this question and one in six respondents had thrown up in the past WEEK!!! It is not at all surprising that one of these average people would characterize someone who only vomits every five years as "never" throwing up.

It's just a matter of perspective. And isn't ours kind of fouled up? I mean I haven't done the nasty, awful thing in 30 years and yet the thought interferes with my life daily.

Really? I just don't understand people who vomit at the drop of the hat to feel better...and once in the past week? S***!! But I guess you're right cause I talk to one of my friends and he vomits like at least 4 times a year and he thinks nothing of it. But my sister hadn't vomited for 4 or 5 years until last month and my mother wouldn't have said anything like that to her...?

Well, I am going on 18 years of not getting sick,...though nausea hits me very frequently,........what are some of the things you do to keep from getting sick?,.....do you have a routine or ritual?

I have a couple of mind tricks I use: I visualize being starving hungry, I keep telling myself that I have nothing in my stomach - and eventually I get hungry and the n* goes away.

Deep breathing helps a lot. Not going to the bathroom keeps me from v*, too. Like if I feel n*, I just lie there motionless and tell myself that I can't do it because I have nothing to v* in - it's a bit extreme, but it works for me! If you go to the bathroom, or the sink, or whatever, you're giving your brain permission to v*.

My boyfriend finds it amazing that I have not been sick once in the entire course of our relationship (5 years)! When I was pregnant with my second child, a friend of his was asking, "So did Lindsay get really bad morning sickness?" and he replied, "Actually, I've never seen her throw up,!" Not even when I'm pregnant will I throw up. My emetophobia went into high gear when I was pregnant, though, just in response to all the physical changes - like your abdominal organs all being forced upwards to the point where your stomach is basically where your lungs usually are - you can't eat a lot at one time or your food might come back on you! Fun, fun times....ha ha!

I think being an emet makes you think that everyone else never "gets sick" and you always do. I soo envy people who go years and years.I think even once every other year is tooo much. (my longest was 5 years and that wasn't long enough for me). Guess it is all in your perspective.</font>

Well my mom has seen me REALLY nauseous and has seen me pace and cry and beg her not to throw up...the weird thing is I've NEVER seen her throw up, I've heard her tell someone that she threw up but that was days after it happened and it wasn't from a stomach virus, it was from some medication she had to take. Same thing with my dad, I only heard him say that he threw up once and that was from drinking too much (My dad's not really a drinker, a glass of wine or two every night but never enough to get him drunk) and they aren't emets! I wanna be like them!! LoL!! As far as I know they haven't had a stomach virus for like ten or 15 years!

I guess my mom has just seen me while I'm really nauseous and crying. My other sisters don't cry when they get really nauseous...I'm an oddball in the family.

My boyfriend says the same thing and so does my Mum. Everytime I complain of feeling N* he says "You won't be S*. You never are!! You haven't been S* in 10 years!" I guess that being pregnant and knowing how S* some women can get in pregnancy I have been very scared and have felt close to V* a lot of times, but have managed not to.
