Is anyone taking any sort of medications to help with their emetophobia? I've heard that there are many meds that are used to treat specific phobias, mostly antidepressants and anxiety meds.

I'm on Lexapro, which is an anti-anxiety medication. I havefound that it has significantly curbed my tendency to get panic attacks. I've been on it for a few years now (I didn't tell my psychiatrist that I was an emetophobiac, but rather that I just had general anxiety), and it has helped me more than anything else has. The thing I like best about it is that I can take it with or without food, so I don't have to worry about becoming n* if I don't have time to get something to eat with it (I'm usually in a big rush in the mornings).

Is anyone else on medication for this disorder? If you are, what are they and do they help you?

Yes I take medication as well and I must say without medication I don't know how I would cope with anxiety and panic. I am on Effexor and Buspar. Effexor is an anti-depressant and Buspar is more for anxiety. I also take Klonapin when I am not pregnant.

I have been on Xanax for the past 18 years. Different strengths at different times but it has saved my life. I have tried all the anitdepress.....but none of them seemed to effect my panic that comes when I get nauseated or see someone getting or looking sick. I have never become addicted to xanax due to fear of withdrawls being nausea and vomiting,....but I have taken it quite a bit. The latest new medication that helps mentally and physically is Zofran oral disenegrating tablets. They are one of the strongest anitemetics available and they do not cause any kind of mental changes or drowsiness. The work very fast.

Did you have any problems with n* when you first started Effexor, Amber? I was prescribed it at one time, but I only took it for a few days because it made me feel sick. I tend to be pretty sensitive to medications though.

Same with Medidate, another antidepressant. I've been on Prozac as well, and that didn't help either (didn't make me n* though).

To be honest I can't remember. It must have not been to bad because I am sure I would have remembered it. Just remember that it is important to push through the uncomfortable feelings because the end result is very much worth it. Effexor has worked the best for me out of all that I have tried. I personally hated prozac...that one was the worst for me. Just remember if it does cause nausea you could take Phennogran or something to help that.
