well i just wanted to share a great experience i had a few days ago...being about 5 1/2mo pregnant and this being my first i honestly dont know what to expect when it comes to pregnancy...i know most of it from books or people i know who have had babies...but anyway no one told me that when a baby gets hiccups it is one of the funniest things ever. first off my baby has been moving around like crazy i think she is dancing in there!! but to have it almost feel like a poke in your stomach each time she hiccups...all i could do was smile and giggle!! not sure what i ate or drank to cause that, maybe the 7up i drank?? anyway it was a very neat thing and each day i am getting more excited to welcome her into my arms and into my life!! Aren't hiccups funny!? It feels so wierd. My first got them a LOT in utero. I don't think it matters what you eat or drink, some babies just get them more than others. Oh, and if you are planning on nursing, drinking pop then will not, I repeat, will not, give your baby gas or hiccups. My MIL tried to tell me that, and I asked my lactation consultant stepmom, and she said no way.

Mine gets them ALL THE TIME! I would guess she probably gets them at least 4 times a day now, and they last for about 5-10 minutes. The thing I like about her getting them (at this point in my pregnancy) is that I can always tell where she is at by the location of her hiccups, so I know if she has flipped. She has been head down for a long time and I am so nervous that she is going to flip around and be breech, then I would have to have a c-section. So far, so good! I just have to make it another 2-3 weeks!

Anyway, I asked my doctor about the hiccups because I thought having them too much could be bad, but she told me that they are a sign the baby is healthy and comfy in there. They breathe and swallow the amniotic fluid and when they swollow too much they get the hiccups. So, if they are getting the hiccups, they are practicing their swallowing and breathing so they are stronger when they are born.

Hiccups are awesome. So is when they get bigger and move around and you can see their foot under your skin! Ha ha.

I'm sure whatever you drink or eat can't possibly get into your amniotic fluid - which is the only thing the baby is "drinking". It's probably just part of their diaphragm development.
