I was just in a meeting with two of my colleagues in the crowded dining area at my university. I started to get that awful nervous anxious gaggy feeling and started to panic about how I could get outta there without them thinking I was weird, but then I reminded myself that the anxiety isn't real nausea, and I forced myself to calm down through a technique I read in a panic disorder book. I literally slumped my body in my chair...it's funny how you don't realize how tense you are until you do this, and when your body is that relaxed it's hard for your tummy to be tense.
After this I was fine for the rest of my meeting because I knew I could control that awful feeling without having to run for a Xanax. Yay! Now I just need to practice it all the time and not just when I am in a real pickle.Edited by: mjewell

what's the name of the book? i may need to find to look and see if i can find it myself.

The technique is the "slumping" - I know it sounds weird, but you don't literally slump in your chair, you just sort of slump your body and imagine your whole body sort of relaxing. It's hard to explain, but when i do that, my stomach and throat muscles relax too. Sometimes I have to do it over and over because I tense up again within seconds, but soon my body stops fighting and I relax.
I can't quite remember which book it was, I read three - any book by Claire Weeks is really good, and then there's one called Power over Panic by Bronwyn Fox.

i do that myself! people are always on my case about my posture, but if i don't feel well, slouching like that actually relaxes me & makes the panicky feel subside a little.
