Re: How to cope at Dentist
The best thing to do is to try and keep doing nice deep breaths through your nose....and try and give youserlf a different distraction to think about....do you have an IPOD?? Maybe listen to some music to even drown thes ounds out may help...
I hate going to the dentist, when they do the Xrays and bitewings on me in the far back bottom teeth, I gag. I can't help it lol
Re: How to cope at Dentist
Thanks the ipod is a good idea
Re: How to cope at Dentist
If your dentist offers conscious sedation you may want to consider that.
Re: How to cope at Dentist
Ive just had a series of moulds taken at the dentist and each involved a large gum shield type thing filled to overflowing with this soft foam which hardens after a couple of mins. That means each one has to be left in for a minute or 2. It wasnt pleasant and I warned the dentist that if I felt like gagging Id wave my arms around and he would have to remove it immediately!! My advice to you would be to breathe through your nose and keep your tongue away from the area youre having the filling in.
Re: How to cope at Dentist
I have recently changed dentists. My boyfriend was actually scared to death of the dentist after a bad experience years ago when he was a child. His new dentist specialises in nervous patients, which I think might be worth you looking in to. Just ask at reception if the dentist is able to deal with this. :)
Most dentists are understanding - now I have changed to the one my boyfriend had, and had my first appointment last week. It went so well I nearly cried haha! Good luck. Just be honest and don't be ashamed by your anxieties. :)
Re: How to cope at Dentist
thanks for all your support, my dentist is very nice and calming but I still haven't slept at all last night for worrying.
I've asked about sedation but they don't offer this facility.
Re: How to cope at Dentist
I was able to get sedatives from my regular doctor to take before going to the dentist. They didn't mind that I was a little drunk from the pills at all, and in combination with positive imagery and an ipod I survived a root canal. Now I have to go back for the molds and I'm pretty freaked, but I have a few more of those sedatives... Sometimes the drug meclizine (dramamine less drowsy) helps with anxiety too and it's an over-the-counter anti-emetic!
Re: How to cope at Dentist
I`m lucky that I`m not terrified of the dentist, as I had some painful experiences as a kid in the 50`s, they used to have slow drills, which took forever to fill a tooth, & they never used cocaine, so it would be agony & I used to scream the place down. Nowadays the only real problem is I`ve had several crowns fitted on my back teeth, & though it doesn`t hurt, it takes ages & I get cramp in my jaws from holding them open for so long.
Re: How to cope at Dentist
My dentist always tells me to raise my hand if i need a break, so I know that's my way out if I need it...I love the Ipod idea!! I told the dentist they should install tvs on the ceilings, and she said that would cost too much money. I gave her a look and reminded her that I was spending over $5,000 for my dental work (I don't have insurance) and that they could afford it now!!! lol!
