not taken medication because it had a possible side effect of nausea or vomiting? haha, a few months ago i got my wisdom teeth out and i was told there was going to be alot of pain. they prescribed me percocet, which is supposed to be really strong and a painkiller. however, because there was a huge chance of both of those horrible things happening, i refused to take the medicine. it turns out my pain wasn't bad at all, and when it was slightly annoying, i'd take aleve. people thought i was insane for not taking it...but honestly, the main reason i didn't was just cause of the chance of nausea or vomiting. have any of you ever refused to take something because of the side effects? I actually got prescribed effexor last week and I still haven't taken it because the side effects say there is a possibility.

I have once and the situation was pretty much the same as you. It wasn't a medication that I absolutely needed such an antibiotic for an infection or something. It was the Vicodin that I was prescribed after my wisdom tooth surgery.

I was prescribed prescription strength ibprofin and Vicodin. For the first few days I didn't take the Vicodin, for the combined reason of I was scared of it making me n* and because the pain wasn't horrible. Eventually, I did take half a one and it helped the little bit of pain I was feeling. Then the next night I took a whole one in hopes that it would knock me out since it's a narcotic (I didn't sleep for two straight days after my surgery). However, it made me edgy. I'm not sure if that was the actual drug or because I freaked out thinking I'd be sick after I took it.

I dont think Ive ever not taken a med for fear of v* side effects, but I have declined taking valium because my brother was like "dude man that stuff will mess you up!!" (as in make you feel real spaced out and stuff) and I just didnt want to feel all whacked out like that. I did end up taking one out of curiosity, and it really didnt do much of anything lol.

Always. The only medicine I will take is ibuprofen, tylenol, and amoxicillian cause I know they don't make me s*. Doctors have given me medicine so many times that I have not taken for that reason!

I'll take something if I'm really ill (bad infections and whatnot). Other than that I opt out.

That's not weird. A lot of teenage girls take birth control to help with irregular periods.

I always take prescribed meds because, well, they are prescribed for a reason! However, if a med that i'm prescribed has a large side effect of v* or n*, i'll ask if there's an alternative with less chance.

I can understand this thinking....and I've been there...but perhaps a better alternative would be to talk to your doctor and say something like "I don't think you understand just HOW TERRIFIED I am"... ask if he or she can prescribe you a very powerful anti-emetic, and perhaps some tranquilizers as well (such as Ativan, lorazepam or whatever). The tranquilizer will prevent you from feeling so anxious that you think you're sick, and the anti-emetic will ensure you're never sick no matter what.

Once you can get treated for your anxiety (like me) you wont ever think of those side-effects when you take other meds! Meanwhile, be gentle with yourself and don't be ashamed to talk to your doctor and get what you need. Especially if it's antibiotics or something you really need.

If it's antibiotics, and I really need them, I will take them, but I won't take a med if it's not absolutely necessary. After I had my first child, the nurses gave me 800 mg ibuprofen, and some kind of prescription painkiller. I was not in much pain, and didn't ask for them, they just gave them to me, and were pressuring me to take them. I ended up taking some of the ibuprofen, but not the other pills.
I do take zoloft, and that one doesn't bother me. I totally understand not taking meds b/c you are scared of the side effects, but please be careful, b/c I once left a skin infection to the point where it became systemic, and that is dangerous. I eventually went to the doctor and got on antibiotics, and was fine. I chewed a lot of ginger while I was on them, and that helped.

    Yeah, me too.

Like I said. If it's a medication I absolutely need, I do take it. I actually take a daily medicaton to help control my hormone levels.

However, with the Vicodin I wasn't in enough pain that I felt I needed it, so with a medication like that which is supposed to be "as needed" I don 't see why I should feel obliged to take it.

I used to flush my ear infection antibiotics down the toilet because they said take with food and i wasnt eating at the time so i was completely spooked to take them.

Oh yea those pills were actually what caused my worst part of emet.I had lost 30 pounds in 2 months and i was under one hundred pounds , all because i took one of the pills without enouph food and i though i was actually going to get s* , i think i should have v* thats day but my body was just trying as hard as it could not to let it out . It worked though but still i ended up being at one of my lowest emet. points in my life I alienated myself from the world and was an anorexic looking person. I hate remebering that time in my life.

I' ve done this lots of times. The first time I was prescribed Paxil, I quit taking it after a few days because it made me feel like I was going to v* one day. I had Percocet when I had my wisdom teeth out, and I didn't have a problem with it at all. It made me feel really good for about 20 moinutes, then knocked me out for a couple of hours. I actually didn't even know that was a side effect. I was in too much pain to read the side effects.
