Well done! It makes me feel better to hear that it went fine for you, as I'm supposed to have mine out, and I'm terrified! Were you awake, or did they put you to sleep?

It was completely NOT as bad as I thought it would be. Ok, so basically here's how it all went.

We left the house around 10:45am, because it takes about half an hour to get there from my house. We got to the office at 11:10am, about 20 minutes before my appointment. I signed in, made my follow up appointment for Monday the 11th, then went to sit down...the waiting time just...dragged. I was trying not to cry but I was shaking so hard it was unbelieveable. They called me in to initial the medical waivers. Any time I saw the word "death", I started crying. I knew that risk was there with my sedation bt I didn't want to think about it...ugh. So anyway, signed off on all that crap, and they took me into the 1st operation suite.

I laid down in the chair and the anaethesiologist put the blood pressure cuff on my arm, and the little clip thing on my middle finger of my left arm. He stuck three heart monitors on me. One on each side of my chest, and one on my lower stomach area. The doctor came in and started me off with an oxygen mask to calm me down a little before they started the nitrous. I just breathed in and out of my nose and I started feeling pretty great. I could hear my heartbeat slowing down on the EKG machine. Then they started the nitrous oxide. Holy crap...it was just...wonderful beyond belief. I felt so floaty and just at peace with everything. When I saw they were going to stick the IV in my hand, I closed my eyes, but couldn't open them back up. I could hear the commercial on the radio in the background keep repeating itself over and over, faster and faster. I felt them tape the IV to my hand. The doctor asked me how I was, all I could get out was "uh huh..." I could see the brightness of the overhead light turn on through my eyelids. I think I was out after that point.

Right before I woke upI saw some really weird stuff in my dreams. I saw really weird colors, and I kept seeing myself getting transported to different "stations" where people would work on me. I could hear people talking but I don't remember what they were saying.

Then, I opened my eyes and looked around. Nobody was around me anymore. The IV was gone except for the needle that was still taped to my hand. All the monitors were off of my body and my mouth was numb, dry, and full of gauze. The nurse came in and helped me get up. I was sooooo wobbly. She helped me into a wheelchair and wheeled me out to the recovery room. I didn't feel n* or anything...in fact, I still felt like I was in happyland. The nurse helped me out of the wheelchair and into the recovery chair, which was insanely comfortable. They went to get my fiancee and we must have sat there for half an hour. The nurse came and gave him a bag of stuff for me. 3 prescriptions, more gauze, and my post-op instructions. Then, she came over to me to take the end of the IV needle of out my hand. She took a square of gauze and put pressure down and pulled it out, which I still didn't feel. What I did feel was my face swelling to great lengths.

By the time I got home, my face was numb and swollen up to my lower eyelids. I took a hydrocodone and fell asleep with a bag of frozen peas on my face. I woke up after 20 minutes, switched sides, and fell asleep again. The next time I got woken up was when it was time to take my penicillin and my ibuprofin. Zach crushed them up and put them in some vanilla ice cream, which tasted sooo good despite the awful tasting medicine. He did that with the hydrocodone too, I forgot about that. I've had to change my gauze about 4 times so far but the bleeding is almost over, I can't taste it anymore. One more change and I should be able to eat some pudding!!!

daffodil, it's much easier to have them put you to sleep. just ask them to give you nitrous oxide before, you won't even notice the IV needle going in except for a tiny poke. You'll be out like a light and won't remember the surgery at all! It was a lot less scary that I thought it would be. Also, REQUEST ANTI-EMETICS! They will put them in your IV before you wake up. I was so glad. I felt totally fine. Someone at my work told me their story. When he woke up he felt so s*, he asked for some apple juice and in 10 minutes (GRAPHIC) he v* all the blood he swallowed. I was so glad they gave me anti-emets, I would have probably wanted to kill myself if I had v* blood. But everything is fine now, my lower jaw is stiff but other than that I have no real pain. I'm due to take another hydrocodone in a little while. Just make sure you take all your pain meds on time, and if possible, take your first one when you get home. That way you won't have any pain when the anaethesia wears off completely. They also give you a local anaesthetic so your entire mouth is numb, so try not to chew on your tongue, you won't even notice its your tongue thats there. it feels like leather if you poke it though, lol. but you will be fine, don't be scared!

the only reason I would be scared is that you loose control after they put you to sleep, and I think I would have a hard time dealing with that, but I wouldn't want to be awake.

congrats on your operation, you are very brave!

Hey, I've had a couple surgeries (like 5 now), in different hospitals etc. when I've been put out and the anesthesia always makes me really n*, but I've always had doctors that were great about the ant-emetic meds and I've never even been close to getting sick when I've had them. I did come close the time I didn't request them. The last surgery I had was at the end of October and they gave me quite a bit of stuff while I was under and when I woke up I was doing ok but then I started too feel a little funny, not really n* but something weird and so I asked for more. The nurse wasn't sure if I could have that much, so she called the doctor and he ok'd some other stuff and they put it in my IV and I was fine. A little goofy, but fine stomach wise.

The only time I had a prob. was when I had my tonsils out in high school and the night nurse didn't want to give me any that my doctor had approved and just told me to quit clicking the morphine button so much cuz that's what was doing it (which I barely was anyway, cuz I knew that wasn't helping). I explained to her my phobia and how the doctor said I could have an anti-emetic and she just said the clicking thing again. I was pissed and my mom came back a short while later and told the nurse the doctor didn't want v* to damage where he'd cauterized. So she gave me some, and got one hell of a lecture from her supervisor the next day. Seems she did the same thing to a 4 yr. old down the hall too.... But seriously, every other surgery I've had people have been awesome and pretty understanding with that. I always make sure I tell everyone who'll be taking part in the process about it and describe the panic attacks I have, what happens, etc. It was written on my chart w/stars in 3 different places and on a sticky note for the anesthesiologist. If nothing else, I think they'd rather just give you the meds than have you have a panic attack they'd have to deal with, so they're pretty good about it. Happy patients make good patients.

As for wisdom teeth, just watch out for the dry socket thing. I got that and it really sucked royally.

Well the bleeding still hasn't stopped yet, and one of my stitches fell out already
. I rinsed my mouth with water this morning, but when I spit it out there wasn't any blood. I waited a second and drooled into the sink and there was like orangey-pinkish colored blood. It's just my lowers that are bleeding now. The uppers have stopped completely. I wish it would stop for good so I can eat ice cream without getting it stuck in the gauze. Hopefully it will stop in a couple more hours. My face is swollen and I only have a small bruise on my lower left side. I'm definately thankful for that. I've taken 2 doses each of my hydrocodone, penicillin, and ibuprofin. This morning the pain isn't as bad so I haven't taken any yet, all I'll need is my bag o' peas! lol
