I just wanted to start this post because my phobia hasn't been that bad
lately, but I have been reading what everyone else is going through and
their worries over exposure and wanted to offer some words of comfort
that have held true for me over the years.

I read a while ago that many, if not most, of what people call sv* or
gastroenteritis, is actually food poisoning or just something that
didn't agree with them. People just call it sv* cause they don't
realize it is food poisoning, or its just easier to explain. I am
pretty sure food poisoning can start even up to a week after you have
eaten the culprit. Now I guess this isn't comforting to those who
worry about v*ing from food, but it should be of some comfort to those
worried about exposure from co-workers. When I hear of someone
near me feeling ill or being sick, I like to assume that it was
something they ate and not contagious. Of course I probably will
try to avoid them for a couple days, but if I saw them the day before
they got sick or something, this is what I try to think and it helps me remain calmer.

What are some other comforting ways of thinking about this phobia and
v*? For instance, I comfort by saying if it does happen it will
be over quickly, and now I use a tip another poster suggested and plan
on turning the lights off in the bathroom if it ever comes down to it,
so I can eliminate one of the unpleasant aspects of the whole
    experience.

People think that because people get sick at different times that it can't be food poisoning but it can be! Sometimes it takes people a different amount of time to get sick depending on their own body.

I comfort myself with the thought that it will be one day of my life and it's not worth giving up everything else in my life for one thing that will pass and I will survive.

Be courageous, believe in yourself, and be the best woman you can be. I'm with you all the way.

Exactly and also, sometimes people get sick because their bodies are
just easily susceptible to v* if they eat something that doesn't agree
with them. Also, lots of times people will v* from coughing from
the regular flu or phlegm, or lots of people just v* easiler when they
are sick. It doesn't mean if we caught the same thing we would
    have the exact symptoms!

I definetly understand why people feel panicked when they hear of a sv*
incident but I am just hoping to provide alternate possibilities
instead of the worst one, you know?

So how long can it actually take for symptoms to show from fp?

The last few times I've v*ed I've either turned the light off in the bathroom or closed my eyes when I did it, I also flush the loo at the same time to drown out the noise (would hate for my fiance or neighbours to hear me) and get rid of the stuff. Then I give my teeth a good clean, and tell myself all the 'badness' is out now and I will be much better for it. All this really helps.

I often comfort myself by saying that I am strong, and that if it comes down to it, it is ultimately my choice whether I do it or not. If I v* in the future, its gonna be a time when I will let myself do it, and I'll be ready. My major worry with this phobia is about losing control.

I comforted myself last wed. while i was sick by saying that while this is pretty bad at the moment, it will stop soon, and i'm ok, and it's going to be ok when it's over.....i prayed alot also, and i was in the bathroom at 4am and it was dark so that helped, i didn't have to see "it"....and i got my pillow and blanket and layed in the floor, and that helped me too.

FP* can take a long time to show up because there are different kinds of fp*. If you get sick within 12-24 hours of eating something it is either a food or norovirus or another virus transferred through the food, with food toxin it can happen as quick as 3 hours after eating. If you get fp* from bacteria it takes at least 3 days to gestate and then you would get symptoms. And for paracites it is similar. And if everyone in the family gets it, but with days difference, it can still be fp* because everyones body handles it differently, so you just never know.
