I have to go in for a root canal this morning. I have already had one
in this tooth, but the dentist that performed it left a piece of
instrument used to clean the roots out in one of the canals. Now it is
infected inside and I have lost some bone. If this endontist is unable
to get this piece of instrument out, then I will lose my tooth. It is
an important tooth, the second molar back on the bottom.

Anyway, I am surprisingly calm now, but I know I am going to become very paniced and anxiety ridden soon.

Ahh I hate dentists like that! Who leaves pieces of the instrument in the tooth!? As for the root canal itself - call me a freak, but I enjoyed mine when i had it over the summer. But yours this time sounds less than enjoyable.

I hope everything turned out well!

Thanks...I wouldn't call my root canal enjoyable, but it wasn't so bad.
My mouth is just a little sore. Unfortunately, they were unable to
remove the instrument that is causing all the problems. He was able to
clean it out and get some antibiotic spray down there. I go back for
another xray in 6 months. If there is more deterioration then they will
have to remove the tooth. He gives my tooth a 60% chance of
heeling. So, hopefully all will turn out okay.

Ouch that sucks! If you loose your tooth you should sue. But 60% is decent in terms of teeth, I got a 70% chance to keep my wisdoms and theyre still solidly in my mouth a year later. So just keep thinking of that 60%.. its more than 40%. I hope all turns out fine!

Susie, I suggest going to a dental school where not only will the treatment cost less than with a regular dentist, they will also be more thorough about how they treat you. You have a better chance of saving the tooth there. Doug

Thanks, I will look into that. I didn't even know that you could go to a dental school. My procedure was very expensive.

That's terrible, I mean about the dentist leaving a piece ofinstrument in there and it causing you so many problems. Surely because it was the dentists fault they are liable to put things right for free? It doesn't seem at all fair that you should have all that expense because of it. I hope your tooth can be saved!

I have had one root canal and that will be my last...seriously, I will extract the damn tooth before I go through that again. I have had so many problems from my root canal that I wish I would have extracted it. My crown needs to be replaced, etc...And this was a procedure that was less than a year ago.

Don't fret babe...I would seriously have it extracted so you wouldn't have to deal with any potential problems with it. I know you say it's an important tooth but you can always get a replacement there.

P.S. Sorry...I have just gone through dental hell lately...

I had a root canal about three years ago. I had no problem whatsoever. I was just bored lying there. I don't mind going to the dentist at all. I'm sorry you may lose a tooth though, that sucks. I'm with tcsarah, surely the dentist who left the instrument in can be held liable? You should look into that, for the pain and suffering that this has caused you.

Thanks, guys! I did ask the dentist if the other dentist that performed
the original root canal would be responsible and he said..."no, it is
just one of the risks". I guess because the instruments are so small. I
am still going to look into it though.
