Lately I've been slipping into a lot of mental fixating on my emet. I don't know if fixating is exactly the right word, but what I'm describing is the constant mental obsession with replaying and re-examining unpleasant experiences over and over again. Apparently this is a common symptom of OCD, being unable to get repetitious unpleasant images out of your head. Of course, being emet, my fixation is about mentally replaying over and over the times where I v*ed, or saw someone else v*, or just imagining v*ing in general. When I get into a fixative cycle, it generates a lot of anxiety, and I can't sleep or rest because if I don't keep my mind busy, it'll keep going back to the unpleasant images.

I just wanted to know... is this common among emets? Does anyone else here do it? And if so, what do you do to distract yourself when you notice yourself fixating?Edited by: thegoldsky

I've done the same thing off and on. When my emet is bad, I tend to fixate on the same subject. I think about what led up to the unpleasant experience, what I ate, the act of IT, and what I did afterward.

When it's more moderate, I don't think about it as much.

This "fixating" is totally normal for those with phobias/anxiety disorders. It's just the way the brain works.

The best thing to do is to try to just STOP. Sounds simpler than it is, but when you find yourself doing it you can just say "STOP!" and go on to something else. At first, you'll have to do that a zillion times but eventually you'll train your brain not to fixate.

That is really good advice. I find myself fixating a lot too. I actually go through all the times I can remember being s* and what I felt like and what I did, etc. I really wish I could think about other things and forget about those times. Of course, I am not hanging on to the good memories nearly as hard! I will try telling my mind to "STOP" from now on...
