LONDON, June 5 (UPI) -- A London bride-to-be whose wedding was postponed because of her fear of vomiting said she is seeking hypnotherapy to help her overcome her phobia.

Emma Pelling, 19, said she has been unable to go through with her wedding to Gareth Heal because she suffers from emetophobia, an intense fear of vomiting, The Telegraph reported Thursday.

"I have this recurring nightmare of being ill as a bride, running out of the church and abandoning my husband at the altar," Pelling said.

Pelling, who said her fear has kept her from visiting places where she has vomited in the past, said she has sought the help of a hypnotherapist to help cure her of the phobia.

"I want to make it a special day for both of us. I hope the hypnotherapist can cure me so I can enjoy our special day without the fear of being ill," she said.

I think she was on GMTV as well one morning. There was a girl on saying she was selling her story to pay for hypnotherapy.

Allypally,

You are getting sleepy. Take a deep breath and feel the heaviness sweep all over you.

It's getting deeper

Yeah she was on GMTV last week!
It must be quite a serious case of emetophobia because, nowadays, and I don't know if this is just because I am better than I used to be, I try never to let my emet stand in the way of important events - eg. weddings, holidays etc.

LOL @ gumdropper1.

I have tried hypnotherapy once. Not for my emet, for something unrelated. All I remember of it is him saying "deeper and deeper" and my trying not to burst out laughing.

I saw this in the paper down here and showed my parents; now my mum thinks I should go to a hypnotherapist! I'm too scared...not being able to control what they do to you... I'm scared I'll "wake up" a completely different person who just goes around eating handfuls of dirt, breathing on public transport and not washing her hands. Perish the thought!

It's only sitting in a chair with your eyes closed relaxing. You can hear, talk and move. I've had two courses although it didn't cure me it did help my confidence.

Lol hun, that really made me laugh!! I had hypnotherapy, and its very wierd. Its like going to sleep, but youre in that sort of state 'before' you go to sleep, so you can still hear everything. They make you very very relaxed. I had loads of sessions, and I didnt wake up a different person at all. Nothing changes in that sense, you dont 'feel' like a different person or anything. You feel the same!! I just felt more relaxed and able to cope with my anxiety. Also, I felt more confident. But I still felt exactly like 'me'. Does that make sense?? I would totally recommend it. I know it doesnt work for anyone, but I would give anything a try once that may help!! xxx

Thanks allypally, it makes sense, and I'll still think about it, but I can imagine how weird it must be. And how expensive! I just had a psychology exam the other day and one of the topics was states of consciousness, among them hynosis, and it scared me even more: "cognitive distortions, compromised self-control, disturbed sensory perception..." I might have to do some more, non-scary research.

Youre very welcome hun!! All you have to do is reassure yourself first!! Thers no point going if its gonna freak you out!! lol. I was just sooooo depserate at that point in my life I had to try something. And im so glad I did!! My Mum with the help of my GP found a brilliant hypnotist with a great reputation. Thats what I would recommend to you. Find a good and reputable hypnotist who specialises in what you want. It really wasnt that wierd. Just felt like I was dozing, I was soooooooo relaxed, and after weeks of not sleeping and being in a constant state of panic and anxiety, it was lovely!! Coudlnt wait till me next appt!! lol. It helped such a lot with my confidece and self-esteem,and I found that cos I had more confidence, I dealt with the phobia so much better. I have also never had another panic attack since (that was 13 years ago). I really would recoomend it to anyone to try. It may not work for everyone, but its worth a shot!! He was a lovely man, and he also taught me self-hypnosis, which I still use and helped me get over my huge fear of dentists!!.
(((hugs))) xxxx

I had hypnotherapy as well. It helped me in the long run - to aid in my own relaxation. But it doesn't "cure" emetophobia. I hope this bride realizes, or someone helps her to see, that the way out of this phobia is a long, long journey. Years perhaps. She might be better off to get married in the minister's office and then just enjoy a reception or something. I married a couple once this way when the fellow was too afraid to stand up in public - he wasn't emet or anything. We just signed the documents and that was that.

I wasn't afraid of the ceremony when I got married but I was afraid of people at the reception drinking too much and v*. Because of this I had a very small wedding with very little alcohol. I made my dh promise not to drink because I didn't want him to be sick. We each just had a little champagne. To this day I still rarely drink and nobody knows that is why I wanted such a small wedding. I told people I just couldn't see spending all that money on one day. If they only knew the sad truth!

I also get very scared of people drinking too much but I am frightened of drunk people in general not just the v* thing. I find drunk people very intimidating.

Hello everyone, I am the girl you are all referring to above ^^^ I ended up not getting married in the end as I wanted to be cured first, but during the process my then partner and I split up. I had four sessions of hypnotherapy in 2008 and was cured immediately. I now don't care if I'm sick - I don't check sell by dates - I can be around drunk people - I finally felt normal! I still had underlying panic attacks though so I went to a different hypnotherapist in 2012 and had four sessions to cure my panic attacks and haven't had one since. I would definitely recommend hypnotherapy. I have had Emetophobia and Anxiety since I was 8. I'm now 25 and finally feel "normal"!

Yes I am :-) I am now a manager of my own shop. Something which I have always wanted to do but never could. I have also managed to travel to Paris on the Eurostar, stay in a hotel, eat in a posh restaurant and go up the Eiffel Tower even though it involves a tiny lift. I finally feel normal! :-)

Welcome, Emma! You're a celebrity (former?) emet. I have to ask, have you felt nauseated or actually vomited since your hypnotherapy? Doug

I had my hypnotherapy in 2008 and in 2010 I had flu so I was obviously ill then but for the first time being sick felt nice. It was like a relief. I felt so awful and it was nice to "get it all out" before I would have absolutely freaked out! Since then I haven't been ill but one day I did allow myself to get drunk and had my first ever hang over which wasn't pleasant.

So glad to hear some feed back on hypnotherapy, I'm really interested in it but was also concerned it might make me a completely different person. I'm going to look into it now, I'm so tired of being anxious all winter.

I thought about hypnotherapy and I even went for a consultation once, but the lady I met with had never heard of emet, so I wasn't keen on giving her a load of my money!

I don't blame you. I've heard it's best to work with someone who is familiar with emet as it can be difficult to treat.
