There has been a lot of confusion about the supposed "norovirus-
killing" hand sanitizers on here, and I just thought I'd share the
information I got with all of you. I e-mailed several websites with
hand sanitizers and other products claiming to kill noro, and here is
what I have been told:
No FDA-approved product has isolated the human norovirus
strain. (But this isn't really news to us: if we had isolated the virus,
we would be much closer to developing a vaccine.)
But don't be scared.
Instead, these companies that sell products claiming to kill
norovirus have used the "murine" (dog) and "feline" strains that
HAVE been isolated, as templates. Their products exhibit microbial
activity against these strains, and effectively kill them. However,
these strains are very close to the human strains, so the companies
have made an educated guess that their products will have microbial
activity against human norovirus, the ones that affect us. It's
extremely likely, as, from what they told me, the dog, cat and human
strains are almost identical.
This is the information i was given by specialists and after studying
the clinical tests provided on websites of different companies.
