Hi, I am new here and I have registered in search of information; I think I might be in the right place. My 22 year old daughter has just told me she thinks she needs to get some help fo a longstanding phobia.

I didn't get far enough into it in our one discussion, but here it is. She is thrown into a major panic attack at the realization that someone is going to vomit.I should have asked her if this included herself but did not.

This is very serious, I really had no idea, but she is considering therapy......Am I in the right place for this condition, or is it the fear of ones own self vomiting only that creates this condition?

    Thank you,

    Murray

Yep you are in the right place. It depends each one of us is different.
Some of us are fine v*ing ourselves but are thrown into full panic if
others do it around or near us. Myself.. I can handle others v*
however IF there is a chance I may v* I am in a panicked state. That
was my main issue previously when others would v* if I saw others..
I then too would v* That scared me but in the end found out the root
of the fear was all about ME v*ing.

So no its not just ones own fear of v*

Therapy is the best place to start for getting help for this phobia. Also
in the meantime if you can maybe go to a book store check out the
"Anxiety and Phobia Workbook" by Edmund Bourne. It has helped
me a lot in every day life situations when I can't be in a therapists
    office.

Welcome to the forum. Its great your finding info for your daughter
and that you are trying to understand what she is going through.
Thanks for being there for her.

Wow you're a great person for doing all this research for your daughter!

I personally am predominantly scared of other people t*u*, and so are several others here as far as I know.

Therapy is definitely something she should try. I wish the both of you all the luck in the world. Also- have you suggested to your daughter that she joins this forum herself? I personally have found it incredibly helpful and supportive, and I've "met" some wonderful people who've helped in an unbelievable amount.

I'm glad I found you all then, thank you. I imagine I will be here for awhile to gain as much understanding as possible. I will also be sure to place an asterisk in the right place from here on.

Thank you for your replies so far, I will eventually(sooner than later)let her know about this place. I don't want to rush her, I am just really amazed she told me, she actually thought I knew; maybe I just wasn't listening.

We place the asterisks because there are some here that are
sensitive to seeing the words in text. So we do that to respect others.

This is great place to gain knowledge. I have had emetophobia since
I was about 10 years old. My mother never knew either. Sometimes
when there is something we are scared or perhaps ashamed of
because we know its irrational or we know people will perhaps look
at us differently we will do anything in our power to hide it from
others. Until we no longer can. I told my mom when I was about your
daughters age. I am now 28. I have been to many psychiatrists,
psychologists, therapists and counselors. I finally stuck out CBT
therapy with a therapist that was very knowledgeable. I went for
years thinking I had this chemical imbalance and that it was beyond
me or so that is what I was told by the other therapists. When in
reality it took someone else (my therapist at the time) telling me. "It
is all in your head" I found that phobias are a bahavorial problem.
The way we think about things needs some tweeking. It takes a ton
of time and patience but in the end its a much better world to live in.

I personally am not cured. I have made vast improvements but
plateaud due to me not finishing the therapy. However I use my
resources I have learned to get me through much more than I used
    to.

Feel free to ask us any questions here. That way you can get a better
understanding then in time maybe tell your daughter about it... We
will help you a long the way.
