    First, you're NOT stupid!!!! Math can be pretty boring to most people, I'm the freak who actually thinks it's fun.....

    Now about these types of problems, they're just forcing you to find the common denominator of each one. Take the first one...

    b + 3/4 = 1/8

    find the common denominator so you can work with the fractions.

    common denominator is 8. so change 3/4 into 8ths which would be 6/8. then isolate the "b" by subtracting 6/8 from both sides.

    b = -5/8.

    check your work by substituting -5/8 into the equation.

    -5/8 + 6/8 = 1/8, which is correct, so your answer is -5/8.

    Try the next one:

    m/2.3 = 4

    you have to isolate the m, by multiplying both sides by 2.3, because2.3 x 1/2.3 = 1.

    so: m = 9.2, check your work, substitute 9.2 in for m, and see that you get 9.2/2.3 = 4, which is correct.

    next:

    n/2 - 3 = 16

    let's do it in 2 steps. first isolate the n/2 byadding 3to both sides, and you get n/2 = 19. n/2 is the same as 1/2n. so you mult. both sides by 2 to get just plain n on the left side. n = 38. check your work, 38/2 -3 = 16, which is correct, so the answer is 38.

    try a couple more, and post your answers, or email me your answers and i'll help you out....

    For 3/4 + 2 = 6...

    I got 1/3....is that right?

    The answer should be 16/3.

    I'll do it step by step:

    3/4x + 2 = 6

    3/4x +2-2 = 6-2

    3/4x = 4

    turn the 4 on the right side into a fraction, or 16/4.

    3/4x = 16/4

    invert and multiply to divide the fractions:

    3/4x * (4/3) = (16/4)*(4/3)

    x = 16/3

    check your work:

    (3/4)*(16/3) + 2 = 6, which is correct, so the answer is 16/3.

    2/3 - 3x = 1/3 + 2x

    You put the x's on one side and the fractions on the other:

    -3x-2x = 1/3 - 2/3

    -5x = -1/3

    then divide both sides by -5 to get

    x = 1/15

    check your work: 2/3 - 3*(1/15) = 1/3 + 2*(1/15)

    It's kind of hairy to get thru but just multiply it out.

    2/3 - 3/15 = 1/3 + 2/15

    common denominator is 15, so make all the fractions the same:

    10/15 - 3/15 = 5/15 + 2/15

    is this true? are they equal? 7/15 = 7/15, so yes they are equal and the answer is x = 1/15

    Next:

    x/3 + x/3 = 6

    combine the x/3's: 2x/3 = 6

    multiply each side by 3 so you get rid of the fraction:

    2x = 18

    divide by 2 to solve:

    x = 9

    check your work:

    9/3 + 9/3 = 3 +3 = 6, so it's correct and the answer is x = 9

    Next:

    2/5 + 3/10 = 7/n

    This one looks scary but it's not.

    the common denominator on the left is 10 so make all the fractions 10th's.

    4/10 + 3/10 = 7/n

    7/10 = 7/n

    Just by looking at that equation you can solve it: both sides of the equals sign should be the same, 7/10 = 7/10, or n = 10.

    If you still don't think you can do it on your own, post some more and I'll be glad to help you!

    Thanks bunches. I'll try to work these out myself until I get the answers you did. I'll probably have bunches more to post. LOL.

    You are NOT stupid!!!! There are things that one person is good at while another may not be and vice versa.... for instance, my brother isn't good at math, I am. It took all I had in me to pass classes where you have to read and memorize: psychology, history, etc. and those are my brother's majors in college. It's all different for each one of us. We each have our gifts and our weaknesses, you're not stupid!!!

    Mysktial Star,

    I don't suppose you live in Southern California? Sometimes it is a lot easier to help someone with math in person. I am so glad 2jo2 was able to explain everything on the computer. I love math. I do math problems for fun, that is how sick I am.
