Ok this has never happened to me before, but I'm no stranger to the phobia...I've never ever had a problem with sex and emetophobia, but yesterday it finally has affected this area of my life.

I don't know why but I got very sick feeling during the sex, and it did cut short the activity. I just don't know why it happened, or how to deal with that. I'm scared to death that it'll keep happening everytime. It's not a sexual issue, since I'm not shy or inhibited sexually in any way, but I do have the anxiety about vomiting during that. I'm really afraid to have sex now because of that, I don't know what to do. All I did was get nauseous, but it's really affecting this.

    Hi Skon,

Since the site is new, I don't know who's a real newbie and who isn't anymore. But I think you are. I'm a 45-year old recovered emetophobe who's doing a Ph.D. in psychology. I work as a counsellor (in grief and crisis) as well as writing a book on emetophobia...bla bla bla...anyway, just letting you know I'm not a teenager before I reply to you cuz there was some confusion here yesterday.

The thing is, the brain is a very powerful thing. Once it makes associations it likes to keep them. So if you're "afraid it'll happen again" it may well happen again, but only because you're afraid (if you know what I mean). Sometimes a phobic gets a thought in his head like "hey I feel alittle off" and it's during sex, and then your reactive brain goes to town with it and makes all sorts of associations you don't want and the anxiety escalates and escalates until you're absolutely CONVINCED there's something wrong with you (like nausea/sickness). Many, many men report a light-headedness during sex because the blood from your head is rushing to your genitals. For guys who AREN'T emetophobic, the feeling is kinda fun...and goes along with the other fun feelings. Like the adrenalyn we all dread (panic attacks) is relished by snowboarders - that kind of thing.

The way to fix this problem is for your rational part of your brain to TELL THE REST OF IT constantly that you're perfectly fine. You'll have to do a lot of self-talk next time during sex. Porn-like stuff...lol...say in your head stuff like "oh my God this feels good...geez she's so...(whatever)". Even if you don't really believe it at that moment JUST KEEP SAYING IT. Try this over and over (what a great homework exercise!) until you kill off the silly connection (neuropathway) that's telling you otherwise. If you get a thought in your head like "oh my God, I'm starting to feel sick..." BEFORE YOU GET PAST 'O MY GOD' just yell inside your head "STOPIT!" or "NO". Then continue with the sexy self-talk. FORCE IT. Practice it like an Olympic athlete.

Remember at all times that the nausea is JUST ANXIETY playing havoc with you. DON'T let it ruin your life!

Good luck, bud! Let us know how this works.

BTW, what part of Canada are you from? I'm in Vancouver.

I am just the opposite. I forget all about if I am nauseated during sex. Too bad I am not getting any.
It\'s all right to have butterflies in your stomach. Just get them to fly in formation.

I have had that happen before but I find that if I let my husband comtinue and even include a sentual massage that I end up feeling way better. It takes my mind off it and I will forget until later that I even felt off before we started.

I find that aromatharapy smells help too. Vanilla, peppermint, lilac any of the relaxation smells help.
Dance like no one is watching. Sing like no one is listening. Love like you\'ve never been hurt and live like it\'s heaven on Earth.
