A local business in my city has offered hypnosisfor several years-- mostly to smoker trying to kick the habit. Out of curiousity, I e-mailed them to see what their thoughts would be on hypnosis for an emet. They were intriqued because they had never heard of this specific fear but they felt very optimistic that hypnosis could help me. Has anyone done any reading or research on this?? Depending on the cost, I might go through with it because it has a possiblity of helping me. any thoughts?

If they don't know what emet is then you do not want to go see them. It's no good to have someone who doesn't understand your subconcious playing aroubd with it whilst you're out!! I tried hypnotherapy and it didn't work, I was too uptight and nervous that it would make me dizzy and then i would v* . It could work but i'd suggest getting referred to a more proffessional hypnotist if you are going to go ahead with it.

I've tried hynosis as well. It seemed to work for a bit, I'm thinking of doing it again, but more sessions.

Hi - I am a hypnotherapist and I will tell you why you should not see one.

Emotophobia is an anxiety disorder. Most (not all) hypnotherapists havent a clue how to deal with that. They are ok for a little bit of feel good stuff to get you over a difficult situation, driving test, wedding day nerves etcbut long term change requires a different approach particlaurtly when you are dealing with a complex phobia.

The combination of some hypnosis with some proper psychotherapy is a much better option. So if you do decide to see a hypnotherapist you need to see if they are just going to give you some suggestion therapy because if they are it will be a waste of your time and money.

I am in the UK. I was touched by sages posting about how she got over her problem. Call me mad - but if you live near Birmingham in the UK, I will treat one person for free. No catches - I would just like to help. My website is www.retracforchange.co.uk

I tried hypnotherapy but my therapist had no experience of treating people with this phobia and dont feel like i got anywhere. I live near birmingham and would be interested in hearing more about your work.
Today is the tomorrow I dreaded yesterday and I\'m ok.

Hello - nice to hear from you.

My phone number is on the website - give me a call to make an appointment, please.

    Heres the website again www.retracforchange.co.uk

I again reiterate that I am doing this for free - otherwise it costs £397. I have clients most of all of today so if you call leave a message with the receptionist and I will call you back.

I live near Birmingham as well, and have tried hypnotherapy twice with very little effect. I have looked at your website and wouldtheoretically like to try anything (no matter what the cost!) Ijust wondered whether you have successfully treated emetophobia before?

Hello - I dont really want to use the forum to discuss my approach - perhaps you could e-mail me off group at [email protected]

I have treated many types of phobias. Some have been very complex orbizarre. In my opinion, Emotophobia is really no different from many other complex phobias in that is an external expression of internal anxiety or conflict.

As I said before, hypnosis is pretty much a waste of time for something like this. It has a part to play but is not the whole story.

Make an appointment and I will explain more - what have you got to lose? What have you got to gain? Only come though if you are really motivated to and want to change.

    Ian,

Thank you for your posts and especially your clarity about hypnotherapy. I agree - it can be a helpful component to an overall treatment program, but a straight hypnotherapy approach has never helped anyone (of the hundreds I've talked to) with this phobia. It is indeed complex, and often very severe.

Thanks again for your words and your offer to help people in your area, especially at no cost. I make a similar offer to those in the Vancouver area in Canada (so far, no takers)Edited by: sage

    Hi all,

4 months have passed since I offered to help anyone in the birmingham area in the UK for nothing.

I had 3 people (all local) contact me by telephone butnot 1 person decided to take me up on free help. Its an interesting world isnt it where some people travel for miles, adjust work schedulesand pay good money to get help and yet when it is offered fro free and its on the doorstep no-one takes it up. Maybe its all a question of motivation and desire. Some people are ready to change and others are not.

Anyway, I have now withdrawn the offer of free help. Thanks to all and especially to Sage for the off group e-mails. Take care. x

Wow, for whatever reason, this truly saddens me. What a shame!

Similarly, I have offered to treat two people in the Vancouver, BC, Canada area for free. Normally treatment for this phobia could cost $5000 or even $10,000. When I emailed both people, I never heard from them again.

    Interesting.....

Just to let you know I'm not cynical, I remember when I suffered from this phobia to an extreme extent. I would have done ANYTHING to get better. Even pay! I paid and paid and paid. One day it finally "paid off". There is no greater value than good emotional health! So I know there are more of you out there like me...you just don't live near Vancouver.

But my offer still stands, and apparently, so does Ian's

Sage, if my treatment program here does not work out, I will move to Canada and stay there as long as it takes to get treated. Hopefully, though, things will work out here. I just got back from Las Vegas, so I was on a couple day hiatus from therapy...it's time to get back to it. Oh, and while in Vegas, I saw a pile of vomit on the sidewalk and didn't have a panic attack. I did have some anxiety, especially b/c I had to walk past it on the way back (I looked the other way), but I didn't change any of my Vegas plans because of seeing the vomit. Yay!

    Hey Kel!

It's good to hear you're positive again! Even though the road is long and hard. But it sounds like you're getting good treatment there, and at least you have a job so you can pay for decent treatment. I'm sure you won't have to move to Canada - lol! Although we can use good lawyers up here - my husband owns a law firm! lol

    Take care,
