OK, to make a long story short I went to the dentist today (my friggin' bday of all friggin' days) anyhow a tooth that has been more trouble than it's worth and has had more work and $ sunk into it than I care to metion is yes a problem AGAIN! I have an abscess on it and I need to see a specialtist (complicated BS) anyhow the dentist I went to today is a new dentist (hopefully a good one FINALLY!!!) and he prescribed Penicillin VK. The only antibiotics I've EVER taken are Amoxicillan and some other one I can't remember (not a penicillin) so I'm concerned. I know I HAVE to take it and plan on taking the 1st one tonight AFTER class (dont' wanna worry at school) Of course, being the emet that I am I checked out "possible side effects" first, and here is what it says "Nausea, vomiting, mild diahrrea or irritation of mouth or throat" OK, so the question, have any of you or your kidsever taken this particular Penicillin? Is it real mild? I'm so scared because 3 out of the 4 possible side effects are gastrointestinal related. It sucks that I HAVE to take it but if I want it to stop hurting and the infection to go away I have to. GRRR! Please help guys, any info is useful!

I have taken penicillin a million times. I used to get tonsilitis al the time, so I was always on it and never had any problems. I think it is actually one of the milder antibiotics, so I am sure you will be fine. If you haven't had problems with amoxicillin, you should be fine with this too.

If you have never had any problems with penicillians before, then you will be fine!! You are probably more likely to v* from not taking the medicine and letting the infection spread than from actually taking the meds. Just take them with milk, or food and you will be fine. And after about a day or 2 your body will get used to the meds, and you won't even feel them. Good luck, you will be fine and I hope everything works out!!

I have'nt taken penecillin in a while and I'm SURE I'd have remembered if it made me feel ill. Try not to worry, it seems that ALL med.s these days have those side effects.

Thanks guys! I continued reading the leaflet that came w/ the pills and it also says that it works best on an empty stomach but can be taken w/ food (bet your butt I will be taking w/ food) so maybe that could be why people had stomach problems w/ it plus to take it one must already be sick so depending ont he illness or other meds being taken maybe that is also why? I'm grasping here! lol

OK starting to get anxious! I didn't take my medicine last night, rather I cried for about 2 hours agonizing over it. So this morning I took one at about 8:15 (it's now noon) I was worried about allergic reactiona s well as the usual emet reactions since my grandpa was allergic to penicillin but that I think is pretty immediate and my throat didnt' close or anything so I'm pretty sure I'm not allergic HOWEVER the past half hour-hour I have been nauseous but then I will feel alittle hungry but it quickly goes away leaving only the nausea, not hungry enough to eat anything. I did not take the penicillin on an empty stomach and have since eaten a yogurt but I'm so scared, my stomach feels a little tight/achy and I'm nauseous. I can take another in about an hour but I'm not so sure about it. Another thing is I have class tomorrow night plus I called the specialist today and can get in on THURSDAY! Huge surprise to get in so quickly. It's about 30-45 minutes away so I'm afraid of the medicine making me feel/be sick those days as well. AHHH! HELP!!! I HATE emet! Normal people just take it and dont' even think about it.

It's probably just your nerves now taking over...i hate antibiotics also and will do anything not to take them...but as long as you eat something with it...really you should only maybe get a little D.....but as long as you are nervous about it...then your stomach is going to feel worse...try to relax...start reading ...or doing something to take your mind off the medication...I know it's hard...but you have to not think about it for a while and just let it work for you.....with an abcess it is very important for you to take it so you won't get even sicker.....meds like that just always give me D....so keep on taking it and soon it will all be over with...good luck...Kate

Thanks Kate. I called and had it changed to Amoxicillin which I've always taken. I feel like a baby ont he one hand and proud of myself for at least trying one I'd never had before on the other. I did feel a bit better knowing I could take the other instead so it probably was anxiety related.

Heres my last question lol do yout hink it will be OK to take the other med startign tomorrow AM? Or will it interact w/ the one I took today?

Nah, it should be out of your system by tomm. Just go ahead and start the new one as scheduled....and just makes yourself eat something with it and then get yourself busy doing something...that's what I always do....I take it like when I get to work....then I know I really want have time to sit there and wonder when the stomache will start.....if I am busy my minds stays off it....our minds relay all messages to our guts....so if we occupy our minds with other things....it will be easier to deal with......I know it's hard.....I have had many battles with myself and antibiotics....and i used to get bronchitis every winter...so you know I HAD to take them then...and really after about 2 days even the D will get less and less....your body does have to adjust to the meds...good luck and let me know how it goes with the new meds......Kate You will survive...and you will be fine!!!

Thanks again, Kate! I did start it this morning. I think because I've taken Amoxicillin before I don't really have the anxiety w/ it. Of course there is always the little emet int he back of my head saying "what if this time it does effect you!?" but I'm trying to ignore it lol.

Your'e very right about keeping busy. i watched a movie yesterday and stopped feeling as bad. Today on the new one I just feel not hungry but then I will for a bit etc that always happens w/ amoxicillin w/ me tho so I'm not going to freak ... or so I say LOL! Anyhow thanks you all for the help and advice. I get so jealous of non emets about stuff like this. I was talking to my Mom about it who is a nurse and she was trying tot ell me to take the penicillin etc the day before I took it and I was trying to explain the fear and it's so hard ot put into words. I did say its as if a non emet were handed a pill and told there's a 50-50 chance it will kill you or help you. While I know I won't die v*ing can seem worse than death I think. OK now I'm rambling. Thanks again!
