The day before yesterday, I picked my kids up from school and my son
informed me that his throat hurt. He is almost six and has never
ever complained of a sore throat in his life. Since he said he
just started to hurt, I said we would keep an eye on it. I tried
not to be too dismissive, but this child complains all the time -
stomach aches, head aches, leg pain - you name it. As the evening
progressed he seemed fine. He played and laughed. At
mealtime, he had a huge dinner and said he felt fine. He
said his throat hurt a little bit, but not much. Since it
had been over 90 degrees that day with unhealthy air quality in our
area, I figured maybe his throat was just irritated from the
ozone. Yesterday morning when he woke up for school, I asked him
how he felt and he said his throat hurt a "tiny bit." I decided
to keep him home from school and take him to the doctor.
As luck would have it, he has strep throat. The doctor said he
could go back to school today (since he would have had two doses of
amoxicillin from yesterday). In fact, lastnight he went with me
to my daughter's last night of softball for the season and ran around
and played, despite me constantly telling he not to. He never
acted a bit different througout this thing and that is way unusual for
him.
The interesting thing the doctor asked was if he felt sick and like
v****. When I asked her why she would ask such a thing
since it was his throat that hurt, she said most little kids v*** from
strep. I know we have had this subjective conversation before
about whether or not kids v*** from strep. Well, it came
from the pediatrician that they do.
She said once they get on the antibiotic, the don't (unless the
antibiotic makes them sick and that is another thing). Well that
was all I had to hear. I stormed out of that appointment and fled
to the pharmacy to get the prescription.
