    Question Fundoplication Nissen surgery

Hi guys. Well, I just got back from hospital and my specialist said I can decide whether to have this surgery done if my symptoms don't improve (they won't) in 3 months.

I want to have it done because my symptoms are driving me nuts (food coming back up so I automatically assume I'm going to v*), but I was wondering if anyone here has had it done and if it was really uncomfortable or not? I'm more worried about pain than anything since I have low-pain threshold. Also, they were talking about the risks of having it done and it's put me off a little bit, especially when they mentioned death.

Also, I heard it can be almost or is impossible for you to v* if you have it done? I was rather happy about that, lol. What are the complications of it? And is it worth it?

I have literally never heard of this surgery...

    (going to google).

that being said, if you have to have it done because your flap is opening and food is coming back up, then do it. But v is a natural thing if you need to get stuff out. I don't want to v ever but I would be scared to lose the option in a case of really being sick and needing to. This comment is geared towards anyone who would look into this electively!

I completely agree, mdgirl. I hate to v* and hope I never do again either but as you said, I would want to if I ingested something I shouldn't have. But that brings me to my next question: if I did go through with the surgery and did ingest something I shouldn't have one day, how am I supposed to v* if the surgery makes it almost impossible to? Unless there's another method or ridding the toxins in your body?

BTW, I heard you have to stay in hospital for 2 to 3 days and am worrying that I'll catch the SV*! :/

Hospitals are gross but they know how to keep wards clean. I had an 8 day stay in 2006 in the cardiac unit, a few 2-3 days stays when pregnant, a 4 day stay after my sons birth and 2 days after a car accident in 2009...5 stays, never got anything. Seriously. Dc hospitals, lots of homeless people, all stays during winter/fall when it is sicker. Don't worry about that part at all.

Yes, your questions are valid and should be posed to the dr. risk vs reward, like any decision. From what I read, sometimes the side effects of the surgery are equally uncomfortable so it appears you need to really evaluate this because I don't believe you can reverse it.

I agree that you need to speak with your doctor about the safety and side effects of this surgery. Horses aren't able to v* which causes all sorts of very serious problems for them. It doesn't sound pleasant, but I am sure that if you are open and honest with your doctor and ask appropriate questions you'll come to the right conclusion and treatment plan for you.

I agree to realllly make sure you know all the information. Like what are the success rates? I 've heard of some people whom it did not go well. And then, you have to change your diet and be careful what you eat as well. I thought the not V* sounded great too, but I believe there can be other side effects that are unpleasant. Please check again with your doc and do research online as well, because if he does the procedure, he may want to "sell" it. Good luck!

I used to feel the same until I met a woman who owned a ranch. Unfortunately horses die for some ridiculous reasons due to their inability to v*. We have to remember that we are given this function to help, not harm.

Awww, that's sad. I know, you're absolutely right - it's a good thing really. Oh, to not be afraid,of a normal bodily function!!

I've often thought that's one reason I like horses so much, haha. But seriously a stomach ache or choke is very dangerous in a horse. I agree, to not be afraid of a normal bodily function would be wonderful!
