OK, I read in a recent post that someone took Phenegran while they had an
sv and v*ed anyway.

I have Zofran and have taken it when what I assume was severe anxiety
made me extremely n*.

Does anyone know the likelyhood of preventing v*ing if you're really sick
and take these prescription meds? Anyone ever had an sv or fp and
prevented it with them? Am I pinning my "safety net" on something I
shouldn't? Thanks......

I've taken Gravoland still vomited but never a prescription medication.

Gravol was my safety net and now I never take it...maybe reverse logic now? That it will make me throw up?

Hate to break it to to Sienna- but there is no drug that will definitively prevent you from vomitting. They can reduce the likelihood of you being sick- but there is always still a chance. I have managed to vomit at least once with every antiemetic I have ever tried, both prescription and over the counter.

I find that they are more likely to work if your nausea is due to anxiety- somewhat because you think they will work, and the source of the anxiety is the phobia which is all in your head- and the remedy is also all in your head (note: I have taken a drug which will prevent myself from throwing up, so I will not throw up). If you are genuinely sick, they still may prevent it from happening- but it may not. I think it depends really on how sick you are, and your system.

I agree with Crimgoddess. I think that most of those anti-emetics are for like motion sickness like what you get when you are traveling or something. If you really are sick then it probably isn't going to help.

I remember the last time I had a stomach virus (When I was like 6 or 7) I was V*ing like non stop the whole day. My mom then gave me this stuff (I forget what it's called...something with a really weird name) I was to put the stuff under my tongue and let it dissolve. Well I did it and I didn't V* again. As it turns out the medicaiton she gave me was like 90% sugar. But I guess the placebo effect really worked on me...sometimes that's all you need.

I read another thread on this forum yesterday that a doctor had
told someone that if they took Phenergan that they wouldn't v*.
That's just not true. I didn't have the heart to tell the person,
so I'm glad someone else brought it up. I take Phenergan when I
have migraines, and it does help with the nausea (I've never v* from a
migraine - knock wood).

The last time I had a sv was 5 years ago, and I hadn't yet
discovered Phenergan, so I can't say whether it would have prevented me
from v*. For bad nausea caused by other factors than a sv
(antibiotics, eating too much too fast, motion sickness, etc.),
however, I took Phenergan and didn't v*.

I remember being around 9 years old and waking up in the middle
of the night with a sv and v*. My mom gave me a prescription
suppository for v* so that we could all sleep through the night.
I didn't v* until 6 hours later when the suppository was said to have
worn off, so I suppose it did keep me from v* while it was in my system.

I asked me doctor and she said there really is no silver bullet for preventing vomiting, but she says that it does help with nausea which can prevent vomit .. if that makes any sense ...

I think a lot of the key is to take the Phenergan as early as
possible. Once you have full-fleldged nausea, it's harder to
combat it.

I know that Phenergan is often given to those in the hospital by injection when they are V* because it helps reduce nausea, but it doesn't necessarily prevent getting sick.
I\'m always a shade of purple...

I have v*ed after taking Gravol (same thing). I agree that there is nothing out there that is positively gonna stop you from v*ing. Crappy, huh?

Anti-emetics DO work. It's just that I think we are all saying that they are not always gonna work. It is not fool-proof. But, rest-assured, they do work, and they do help!

I agree that they do work. They work on the "v center" in the brain and shuts it off, so usually you won't v' if you've taken one and its gone to work. The problem with them (and most meds) if you use them a lot, they are not as effective.

Other meds are helpful in soothing the stomach, not the "v center" but they can work, like Pepto Bismol and Emetrol. I usually take those two as first lines of denfense before I'll take an anti emetic.

I dont know for sure personally.
I had liquid phenregen when I was sick from stopping an antidepressant and I didnt take it fast enough and up it came..
I now take phenregen in tablet form every single night. I dont know if its bad for me or not but it calms me down and helps me sleep. I try to take a very small amount unless Im really scared or something. Either way it helps me mentally.
