Ihad to post this because I think its kind of funny.

do any of you guys ever get these little, hard, foul smelling balls of something that come up the back of your throat? ( not your tonsils)I get them once every blue moon, and they are sooo gross!

I often wonder where they come from and what they want from me! ( lol)

also, i can't bring myself to spit them out so I usually try and swallow them instead. does anyone else get this?

LOL! Great topic, I'm so glad someone's brought this issue to light!

I'm not 100% sure if I've had them or not, but usually when I have a horrible juicy cough (sorry >_< couldn't describe it any other way!) I get disgusting balls of phlegm-y type stuff. May/may not be the same thing, but yeah, it's gross alright!

They smell so nasty and yes, I do spit them out. I actually put it in my hand to make sure I have not pulled a body part out and the smell is so AWFUL you want to die. I do wonder what that comes from.

Tonsil stones can be a source of chronic bad breath and discomfort. People with tonsil stones often complain of actual pain and discomfort from these little hardened clumps that lodge in their throats. In addition to the pain caused by tonsil stones, the stench is awful, and often the cause of bad breath.

Understanding what tonsil stones or tonsilloliths are can help us to understand why they smell so bad and cause discomfort. Tonsil stones are tiny, hard stones that form in the pocket or crypts of the tonsils. They contain high quantities of sulfa and bacteria, and when crushed, produce the sulfuric smell of rotten eggs. The odor is truly horrible and it gives people who suffer from tonsil stones really bad breath.

Tonsil stones give people the sensation of something being caught in their throat, as those little hard stones are actually caught in the folds and tissue of the tonsils. Many sufferers resort to drastic measures to remove their tonsil stones, including using various instruments, cotton swabs, fingernails, and more to scratch them out. Unfortunately, they end up damaging the soft tissue of the tonsils, and breaking open the stinky tonsil stones.

Most dentists and physicians recommend using a water pick and salt water gargles to remove tonsil stones, and nothing else. Usage of foreign objects can cause scarring and discomfort. It just isn’t a good idea to jab pointed objects into your throat to pick out the stones. The water pick will send a gentle stream of water to push or wash the stones out of the crypts, without crushing them and releasing the foul smell.

Of course, smelly little tonsil stones will also leave you with a bad taste in your mouth. Strong mouthwashes that are certified for use in eliminating bad breath, not just freshening bad breath, may be helpful to eliminate the bad taste as well as reducing the bacteria that cause the bad breath.

Many people who suffer with tonsil stones will find a white film builds up on their tongue. This is caused by too much bacteria and mucous. It may be useful to use a tongue scraper to gentle scrape away the film on the tongue itself, to reduce the cause of the bad breath.

Tonsil stones will only grow in the tonsils, so those individuals with chronic problems may benefit from a tonsillectomy. This surgical procedure is, of course, a last resort, and many physicians will not even to do it unless there are other serious symptoms and problems associated with recurring sore throats. It is worth discussing with your doctor.

While harmless in themselves, tonsil stones are an irritating, smelly problem for people who get them. They form in the crevices of the tonsils and are often hard to see, and not so easy to remove. Good hygiene, rinsing with a water pick, and salt water gargles can help eliminate the tonsil stones, and reduce the bad breath that they create.

ew. I used to think it was because I had tonsilitis so many time as a kid ( at least 6 or 7 times a year). I hope that its nothing serious.

And I do have scars on my tonsils but that's a result of having strep throat WAAAAAAAAAAAAY too many times in like 3 months, it was about 7 or 8 times over that 3 month period, very bad time in my life. so yeah good to know what those things are

ugh! I suffer from this! I get them a few times a week. I'm still concidering getting my tonsils removed. I went to a few specialists about these gross tonsil stones and nothing I can do but get the tonsils removed. (wich is not recommemded for adults)

(very gross bewarned!) I get alot of them in my left tonsil, and have to scrape them out weekly with a steril tool. It took me AGES to do this since being emet makes me horrified of things in my throat but eventually the feeing of rocks in my tonsils was worse.

I have them too! I remember when I was about 10 years old, I was
laughing really hard and my cousin saw one on my tonsil. She was
convinced that I had a tooth growing in my throat! They are really
    gross though!

Ok, after the description posted by trixie, I don't think I've ever had them. They sound horrible though! Someone post a picture next time they get one!!! ....actually that might be going a bit far But I'm just oddly intrigued!

I wonder if there's some way to prevent them..?

From what I know, they consist of masses of white blood cells that are fightingbacteria on your tonsils.
