Here is a list of things I do and don't do because of my phobia - it is fairly short at the moment because I am just about to leave work - but it's a start - feel free to add your do's and don'ts:

If I see a parked car I always check to see whether the car has stopped for someone to be sick

Open doors in public areas with cuff of sleeve

Won’t go on holiday with other families unless I am in my own apartment/villa (for fear of other people getting sick – whether it be drink related or sv)

Won’t sit in the carriage on a train where the toilets are

I wont go in a cubicle in a public toilet if the seat is down, in case there is something under there I don’t like!

When anybody rings in ill at work, I give them the third degree as to what is wrong with them! Not because I am nosey but because I like to know whether they have been sick

Automatically assume that everyone who is off sick has an sv unless I hear otherwise

Check out everyone around me on the train to make sure they don’t look ill (as in a greeny colour)!

Always sleep with my bedroom window open

Don’t really like going to peoples houses in the winter, just in case someone has an sv

Love fresh air – will always favour windows open even if it is freezing cold. (I bet people hate me on the train because I always open the window, come rain or shine!)

Always burn my food so i know its well cooked.

Stay well away from people that have come back to work after being off work.

Hate Night times and go to bed really early, with the window open!!!!

Always sit in the bathroom car on the train.

Never touch my face with bare hands.

Always sleep with the TV on.

Always sterilize my office with Purell after clients visit who say they were sick.

Always ask a million questions if someone is out sick, and then freak out if I hear an answer that involves vomiting.

Always get nervous when my fiance comes home and he has been drinking.

Open and close bathroom stall doors with a tissue or my sleeve.

Flush public toilets with my foot (I have actually fallen over doing this, but hey, it beats picking up germs).

Burn food to make sure it's cooked.

Sanitize like crazy when raw meat is involved in a meal.

Wash my hands till they bleed.

I do the opposite. I always sit on the seat closest to the aisle and closest to the toilets incase I need the.

I have a bin in my room, which I always have to have empty incase I need it in the night.

I always always have a bottle of water with me.

If somewhere new I always figure out where the closest exit is.

I always ask people how theyre feeling, if they're ok etc.

    I over cook my food.

*new habit* I wash my hands long enough to sing happy birthday twice

I'm sure there's more that I can't think of on the spot.

    I do the following:

~Carry a bottle of Purell in my purse and use it constantly, and always before eating (my 19 month old daughter now likes to do this too!)

~Say a prayer before bedtime asking that no one become ill during the night

~Use a dry paper towel to turn water faucets off in restrooms and another one to open the bathroom door

~Say a prayer before eating out in a restaurant thatmymealis not contaminated by food poison or viruses

~Never let my daughtersit in bareshopping carts. I have a special cloth cover that goes over the cart that we use when we shop.

~Refuse to let my daughter go to Chuck-E-Cheese, Gymboree, or play in those yucky playgrounds at McDonald's. I also rarely take her to the park. I really hate my phobia for this since I know she would love it

There are tons of other things I do, I'll have to think about it more...

    - Pray before I go to bed that none of us wake up in the night to v*.

-wash hands like crazy, especially before eating

-use papertowel to turn off public sinks and open the bathroom door

-overcook meat and question other's cooking (drives my husband and my mom crazy)

-ask my daughter a million times when she doesn't feel well (even if a cold) if her belly hurts or if she is going to throw up)

-carry pepto bismol everywhere with me

-don't let my daughter play in the indoor public play areas (Mc D's, etc.)

-ask her every day who was absent from school

**The list goes on, it's horrible. But these are the most common things that I do. Seems like we all have most of these things in common.

OMG, me too. I consider myemet pretty bad.

I always carry Purell in purse, car and a large bottle at home then after the travel bottle has been used a lot, I have to put tons of Purell over the bottle because of the numeroous times I've come into contact with it before I sanitized my hands. So in other words, I sanitize the Purell bottle on the outside.

I clean the steering wheel to my car with Purell; just in case.

I use Lysol around the house a lot and onto the door knobs.

I also always flush public toilets with my foot or the tip of my long nail and push downward. I know it may sound awkward but only to those who don't understand us.

I also question my students upon their arrival after several absences. I simply must know why they were out--not to be nosey but to see if there is some illness I must beware of.

I frequently clean the computer keyboard since my husband uses it a lot and he is opposite to me. He could care less about germs and he does not get sick like you think he would.

I will not eat leftover food after 24 hoursjust in case they have gone bad.

If some food has been frozen too long then I won't eat from it.

I try to eat foods that are difficult to get food poisoning from like cooking my own rice, noodles, frozen veggies or canned veggies etc. I am iffy about meats since I've seen packages of meat misplaced in other ailses in the stores and strongly believe the workers are too lazy to throw it away so instead, they put it back into the freezer and in my mind, it might have been out too long at room temp. So to avoid that kind of food poisoning, I avoid meats at times. I'll eat bakery foods such as breads, sweet bread, and snacks.

I clean the utensils at pub. restaurants with my towel and a little water from the glass of water they bring me. I clean as much as possible in case they didn't clean it well because I HAVE received super dirty utensils and have gotten freaked about that.

I also grab my paper towel before I wash my hands so that when I'm done, I already have the paper towel and don't have to come in contact with the dispenser.

I always ask for straws and never sip from glasses at public restaurants.

I also refuse to share someone else's drink just to taste test some new beverage. I fear I may get some germs that will cause illness

I know there are other things I do but can't remember now.

-Wash/sanitize my hands so much they are constantly rough and dry.

-Sleep with a towel on the floor beside my bed.

-Eat everything with a fork including toast, cookies, chips. I pretty
much won't put anything in my mouth that I've held in my bare hands.
Even with medication I measure out a dosage in the cap and then use the
cap to dump the pills into my mouth.

-Panic if somone rushes to the bathroom in the middle of the night or
jolts up from a nap and rushes to the bathroom. (My bro did that once
and it freaked me out. He wasn't sick though he just needed to
pee...apparently he was a little overly energetic)

-Not eat sushi, oysters, clams, mussels, deli meat, or anything that calls for raw or softcooked eggs.

    -Cook chicken for 40 minutes.

-Ride rollarcoasters. I've never been on one, but considering how I've
reacted to other fast rides I'd probably be fine. I just can't stand
the thought that someone else might v* and it could splatter all over
    me...ick!

-Drugs. If there's anything emets seem to have going for them it's that
most will never be alcoholics or drug additicts since we fear v*ing
    during detox.

-Ask my friends/family if they're feeling sick if I have a dream about
them v*ing or even just have a completely unfounded feeling that they
    might be sick.

Don't eat after 6 o'clock at night just in case I have to wake up in the
middle of the night and instantly V* (my stomach will be empty-I hope!)
This has never happened in 30 years.

Sanitze with Purell after I touch menus at restarunts or tongs at buffets.

Sanitize any kind of bottle that may be on the restaraunt table (salt, etc.)

Always look for V* out in public.

Sanitze after everything I touch in public.

Don't like to travel far from home for fear of being in the presence of V*
or me having to V* Airplanes, etc.

Door handles are the worst, I use my sleeve and if I do touch I instantly
    sanitize with purrell.

I don't like to touch my mail, thinking it could be contaminated with
germs from the mail man so I sanitize after I touch it.

I let my 2 yr old daughter play on anything and everything out in public
because I REFUSE to let my phobia affect her life as much as I can help it.
I CRINGE the entire time, but I always let her play and then disinfect her
    hands when she is done.

The silly thing is, even when I look at why a car has pulled over and there is somebody being sick, I start analysing as to why they are sick i.e., 'I wonder why they are sick, are they car sick, have they got a bug, have they got food poisoning'? etc etc - it is totally crazy - I don't even know the person or haven't even been anywhere near them! And I think about it for about an hour afterwards!

    My list would be:-

    - I do the car thing, and then wonder if the bugs could have got in the air intake and infect me (strange but they never have )

    - I also do the foot thing with flushing toilets - even in my own house which I know is safe

    - use the little finger on my left hand to open doors after I have left
a room in a public place (have the strongest fingers in the world now)

    - Over analyse and over question people who have been off ill, so much
so one time that I got hauled into the bosses office and was told that
why people are off sick is non of my business (ooops)

    - Keep a constant eye on Google News for reports of winter v*
virus/bug, and then constantly analyse the data from Health Protection
agency monthly disease stats, and the National Disease Surveillance
Centre (ireland) weekly disease stats to make sure norovirus is not in
    my area

    - Wash my hands until they are dry and bleed (use evening primrose oil taken from capsules to keep them moist - and it works)

    - Hold my breath when going into the toilets at work until I can see there is no sign of v* or d* in any of the cubicles

    - Walk halfway across the university campus to find toilets that I know
are kept a lot cleaner than my work ones when I need to go

    - Always have motilium in the medicine cabinet (just in case)

    - Obsessive about food hygiene in others houses, and have been known to criticise people for the way they handle food

    - Take latex gloves from work to handle raw meat so that I don't have
to spend 10 minutes scrubbing my hands, just in case I miss a bacteria
    or two.

    - Always subtly find out how my niece and nephew are befoer I go anywhere near their house

And I think the worst one is, I put off having kids until last year
purely because of the fear that as soon as they go to childcare and
school the house will be rampant with bugs, and for that I am really
ashamed of myself. However I think I am over that one now with
the birth of my first, and planning the second one already.

    Think thats it really.

    Iain

P.S. Oh yes, and if I do feel ill, I just tell myself that v*ing is
v*ing and that it is over in seconds. I know that for most people
that is not an option, but it does help me to lower anxiety when the
    eneviatable occurs.

You know, i am quite please with myself as i have been reading everyones lists and have realised how much better i have become about my emet in the last year!I have gone from practically starving myself *almost* to death for fear ofv* and being so weak and poorly i couldn't even get out of bed, taking 15+anti emeticpillsa day, washing like crazy until iwas sore and bleeding and not hardly touching anything for fear of contamination TO Being back at work full time, 20lbs heavier (stillonly eating very safe foods, but getting more confident each day) only washing my hands when iREALLY need to (my therapist told me that over washing was letting the bacteria in andthat really freaked me out!)I still use purell now and again, but not to the extent that i used to. The only thing i do still require is that i have a stock of Motilium and Sominex, they are my 'just in case' items..............It's quite liberating not to feel as though my phobia is in control of me and that i am managing to live with it and control it

    - won't leave home without hand santizer

    - must ALWAYS locate the closest bathroom and the fastest route to getting there, along with an alternate route

    - I constantly search for trash cans "just in case" I need to use one

    - struggle with eating out and will often eat leftovers from a family style take-out dinner that my family has brought home and eaten the night before (I make them eat it first in case they get sick)

    - I never eat or drink after ANYONE! No exceptions!!
I\'m always a shade of purple...

<DIV>I am guessing that I do not have the fear as bad as many people there. </DIV>
    <DIV></DIV>
<DIV>i will tell you, after a couple of sv's over the last couple of years, I have begun taking extra precautions. </DIV>
    <DIV></DIV>
<DIV>I will say this, a guy at work the other day said that he had thrown up three times during the night and once or twice at work, and I am thinking, what the hell are you doing here! I realize I have been guilty of this myself, as I have had a sv and have gone to work, because things need to get done. Once was for a training class. </DIV>
    <DIV></DIV>
<DIV>Anyway, i am glad I do not have it this bad. I will say I do not like to share my food, or anyone else's food, this includes all family members. </DIV>
    <DIV></DIV>
<DIV>I generally do not share drinks either, but, this does happen from time to time. </DIV>
    <DIV></DIV>
<DIV>It is amazing what this fear can do to you, and sometimes I wonder howI have lasted in EMS this long. I go nuts when people call an amublance cause there stomach hurts, or because they have been sick all night. </DIV>
    <DIV></DIV>
<DIV>See, I am different with others that if I know you are sick from drinking, or running a track race (ex girlfriend in HS hurled after every race...ugh) I am generally OK. </DIV>
    <DIV></DIV>
<DIV>It is thinking they have a virus that makes me nuts......anyway, I see this phobia can be worse, and I am glad that mine is not as bad as others, but my thoughts go out to all of you!</DIV>

Slingshot, what is your job? Just curious.

I think the leaving your windows open at night thing actually isn't so crazy. In college I was in a sorority and the state laws were such that all sleeping porches in fraternity and sorority houses had to have the windows open at all times for health reasons. Even in the dead of winter (and in Eastern Washington, it snows...a LOT!) I never got better sleep than when i had to sleep on that sleeping porch. There were about 20-30 girls who slept up there, and you can imagine at any given time there were a few sick, but I never caught anything, and I strongly believe it was because of the open windows. It was weird at first, but everyone had heating blamkets and lots of covers, and we really did sleep well. The hard part was getting out of your toasty bed in the morning.

Slingshot, I'm the same way about viruses. I work in nursing and if I know that someone is v* because of their meds, or because of anesthesia or some other nonviral reason (like having appendicitis) then I'm pretty much ok with v*. it's when I know it's CONTAGIOUS and I could potentially v* too that I start to freak out.

Hi, I always have a packet of Motilium on me (and in the bathroom and
the bedrom and kitchen) and when there are sickness bugs going round I
make sure I have pepto bismol and emetrol and anything else that might
help. The motilium works best if taken at the very start of feeling that I
might have something that could lead to v........ing.... My daughter was ill
the other day - nightmare - but I dosed her with motilium every 4hours
and although she came near, she wasn't actually s...k. {Motilium =
domperridone) Apparently it stops the muscle from opening and allowing
you to throw up. GOOD LUCK

Here is my list of what an emet does and doen;t do:

Hold my breath if anyone around me is ill or looks suspect

Swallow motilium if feeling anxious about v......g

Hold my breath if anyone near me coughs or sneezes or looks ill

Won't eat anything from a bakery with meat in (eg cornish pasty, sausage
roll, ham sandwich etc) as it might be contaminated and crawling with
germs 'cos of lack of refrigeration)

If eating with hands won't eat bit my fingers have touched

Shut my eyes, hold breath, fingers in ears if see someone v....t , either in
    real life or on t.v./movie

    Hate people burping

    Hate people coughing, especially violently....

    Hate people spitting

    Will not touch toilet seat

HATE dishcloths and tea towels. refuse to use them

Choose food from back of refrigerator in shops but still panic incase
someone found a pack out of the fridge and put it far back behind other
    packs and I've chosen it..

    Hate flies

    Hate cutting boards

I could sit here for hours ...so many things I'm (emeto) phobic about

I'm off now to look for some emetrol or gravol in chemist before it shuts.

Some of you have such long lists. They sound exhausting to keep in effect. I feel sad when I read them because they sound so tiring and like they place such constraints on your way of life.

I wonder what it would be like if now that you've actually written down the lists here, if you printed them out, and then tried for a week to stop doing one of the things (one that causes the least amount of anxiety for you). And then you could see how you fare without doing that particular thing. Maybe you would find that you are allright without it.

Flies! They are the worst. I am obsessed at the time of year when flies are about. Dirty horrible things that land on your food! Everything gets covered when flies are about! Especially those horrible blue bottles!

I will not buy anything out of a sandwich shop where I see flies flying around because they land on everything! Some people do not bother about them but I certainly do!

    japa,

I thought about what you suggested, and I imagined doing it for a while only. I came to this conclusion. I strongly believe that yes, I could easily stop doing everything on MY list and yes, I would feel less stressed during the day as I enjoyed eating out somewhere and being carefree. So during the day, I'd be stress-fress. But then, if at night if I felt the slightest bit of unusual churning in my stomach or heard some unusual sound, I'd be in a panic ALL night wondering if while being carefree I had poor judgment in choosing one of the restaurants I went to and it would still keep me in a panic for at least 10-12 hours--half a day. It's almost equivalent. I see it as having fun for 12 hours and then being in misery for the latter 12 hours. I'm not sure this would work for ME. However, I guess I could try it some day when I felt more confident about the idea. I think I'd rather drain myself some washing, cleaning and enjoying this great clean dinner I prepared and sleep more soundly about it and have a panic over something else that might happen like someone sneezing near me. This reminds me, yesterday I went mall shopping briefly, and I walked into this store and I heard a saleslady congested and blowing into a tissue. I turned to look at her and she looked miserable from a cold or flu. Her face looked somewhat tired and her nose was red from irritation. She sounded as if she was just beginning to perhaps feel better and get over it so I know that the some days before and after a cold are the most contagious--or I've read somewhere so I keep this in mind. I held my breathe and got out of there quickly. Thanks for the tip. I hope to try it at least one day and be able to report back on this.

Can you think of other ideas, japa? Post them here and I'll check later.
