Hi, I'm new here. I'm 36 and have two children and have never thrown up. I have always been terrified of it. My youngest son just got overa stomach flu and I've been drugging myself with Promethazine and Klonopin for days "just in case". I'm wondering...if I were going to catch it...how long would it take for me to know? I'm living in terror every minute of the day and night...I can't sleep because I'm afraid I'll wake up in the middle of the night sick and I think as long as I'm awake, I can watch for signs and control it somewhat or take another pill.

Also, I'm so scared of throwing up or feeling so nauseous that I may throw up that I'm afraid I'll slit my wrists if it ever happens. I know that's a terrible way to think and that it's incredibly irrational but I am seriously more afraid of getting sick than death...except that I love my children more than anything. I'm being torn apart by this fear and I'm wondering...if it happens, how do I get through it? How would I handle it without doing something drastic? I'm so scared I don't know what to do. Can anyone offer any help at all?

Because you never thrown up before it might not be as bad for you... just keep in mind and remember other ppl who have done it before and didn't make it sucha big deal out of it.. and went on about their day as usual... just try to keep yourself calm and remember its probably nothing than your mind overreacting.. I say you go speak to your doctor about this issue.

    Feel better.

Hello Kathleen, welcome to the forums!

Wow, you have never thrown up? That really is incredible...if you haven't done it so far, I'd say that there is very little chance of you doing it at all any time soon, unless you really wanted to I suppose - your body probably has a very good immunity against bugs and the like, and if you can't remember ever physically going through the motions of being sick, then your body has also probably forgotten how! Note, I'm no doctor, I'm only 19, so I could be way off, but it's just how I see it! You would probably have to see a specialist to figure out your situation properly...I still can't believe you have never actually done it! You must have a very healthy, strong system to be able to withstand that sort of thing.

We are all in a similar sort of boat here -many people here have not thrown up for 30+ years (I myself have only made it to 11, and am still going strong!). If you suffer from panic attacks because of this phobia, then rest assured, because again, we are all the same! Feeling nauseous/anxious can easily be dealt with, so don't worry, there are lots of mind over matter techniques around here to help you calm down, if you ever wake up in the night and are scared (lots of us fear the night most of all, for the same reason you mentioned!). There is a great link around this site somewhere, for dealing with panic...I wish I had it here, but take a look around, you'll find it.

It isn't a cure for emetophobia, but it really does help when you feel like things are getting out of control. Again, welcome to the forums, hope to see you around!

    ~Julie

PS. Don't worry yourself about catching this stomach flu your son has, if you take the right precautions you should be fine. Just wash your hands frequently, that sort of thing, which I'm sure you already do ^__^

Wow, you've never thrown up? Ok, I'll shed some light on the subject.

Firstly, I can understand the point about how scary it must seem, I also know what you mean by being afraid of slitting your wrists if it happens.

What I did to avoid my problem was "study" the problem. I knew nothing about illness until 2003 but after that, I got this weird "goal" where I went online and studied every possible kind of illness that can cause v*. What this did was familierize myself with exact symptoms and treatment. There is almost definately a way around most illness.

For example, food poisoning/Salmonella,etc, any bacteria infections can be "cured" via the use of antibiotics, so if you ever get a food-borne illness, get to the nearest hospital (lots of chemists also sell remedies). I did go to the hospital once, they take a stool sample then give you something for the infection.

Virus however is different, usually requiring a needle or immunization shot. Stomach flu (which I just suffered a terrible bout of http://www.emetophobia.org/forum/for...sp?TID=7758&am p;PN=1) can be quite nasty BUT it doesn't generally last as long as food poisoning (which can be 3 - 10 days) but there is one important thing you have that I don't. A fully grown adults immune system, which will be at it's strongest ever.

If you do happen to contractGastroenteritis/stomach flu, go to the hospital, the doctor may give medications to stop vomiting (these are called antiemetics) such as promethazine (Phenergan, Anergan), prochlorperazine (Compazine), or ondansetron (Zofran). Sometimes these medications are given as a suppository.

I never knew about antimetics, but if you are ever really scared or worried, go to the chemist or hospital and ask for an antiemtic. As far as I know, they relax the stomach muscles and cease v*.

Hope I've helped, may your life be completely illness free!

Hi everyone and thanks for your posts.

My kids have gotten the stomach flu before but I was able to hide out in my room and have my mom take care of them. I can't do that anymore.

My mother says I threw up once when I was 3 but she can't remember me ever doing it other than that one time.

I've studied emetophobia for years, have been to therapists, hypnotists, past life regressionists, and even psychics (including sylvia browne). Nothing has helped. The only thing that helps me is promethazine and klonopin or any tranquilizer.

I feel very lucky that it's never happened...I came close once. When I was about 18, my "date" put a date rape drug in my drink and I passed out. When I woke up, I felt violently ill and "almost" did it but didn't. I actually felt so sick that I was willing to do "it" just to get the feeling to go away. It never happened and I felt sick alllll night which was the longest and worst night of my life. A hundred times worse than childbirth in my opinion.

I'm on social security disability because of my panic attacks and emetophobia. I have all the same fears and phobias everyone else has (food, germs, public, people, etc)....I can live through the days with this as long as I don't feel sick or am not exposed to it. But when something happens to actually bring the fear to the reality forefront, I can't deal. That's when I'm afraid I'll do something stupid and drastic.

Thanks for listening and for any and all advice. I'll do/try anything (except "it") to get over this.

Did you ever try exposure therapy?

And how long did you work with the therapists?

Successful treatment takes a long time.

I never V* much as a kid either. In fact, I can only remember V* THREE times in my whole life --- 2 of the 3 times were with the same virus. Some kids just don't V* much growing up and I guess we are two of the lucky ones with that.
