I am having a really hard time with my emetophobia and anxiety right now. My first husband did not understand this at all, and I think my fears had something to do with our break-up. I'm married again, and I know my husband just does not understand this. I have also spoken on the phone with a couple of psychologists, and they have never even heard of ths phobia! I don't understand that as everywhere I look, emetophobia is in the top 10 phobias. My question is, how do you get people to understand what this is like for us? I have tried explaining it to my husband, and I would really like him to understand how I feel.

You really can't. If someone does not have the same phobia, it is hard for them to understand. They can sympathize (maybe) and empathize (hopefully). Other than that, they may find it difficult to comprehend. Take something that is so mundane for you and imagine being completely phobic about it. It may seem silly to you, which is how someone who is not emet may be feel about this fear.

NOTE: I'M REALLY "SAGE" - OVER 1000 POSTS AND MODERATOR OF THIS SITE...RESIDENT PSYCHOTHERAPIST, CURED EMET...YADA YADA YADA...BUT JOHN ACCIDENTALLY LOCKED ME OUT OF THE WHOLE FORUM SO I HAD TO RE-REGISTER UNTIL HE RESPONDS TO MY EMAILS!!!!!!!

So...here's my thinking on your post:

You can try printing out the INFO ARTICLE on the top of the Treatments thread, and give it to him to read. Although Stella9 is right, in the end he may still not understand. Or he may choose not to. I DO understand how important it is for someone else to understand you! However we have no control over other people. The psychologist I see now (who is not the one who helped me be basically cured of this) researched emetophobia (including this site) on his own initiative, between the time I talked to him on the phone and my first visit. Then he LISTENED for ages and ages so that he could try to understand. He is a gem, indeed. YOu need a gem like this...and then you will get the help that you need. Don't be put off by psychologists who haven't heard of it...that's not necessary. All phobias are basically alike - this one happens to be quite severe. It is also rare. The jury's still out as to whether it fits into the top 10. Realistically, if it did - why wouldn't more people have it or have heard of it? Edited by: sage2
