Hi everyone,

I'm having a tonsillectomy next week but I'm petrified in case it makes me vomit.

Has anyone here had a tonsillectomy or an operation with a risk of sickness?

I had mine out when I was 4, it was mandatory back then. How old are you?
A friend of mine had her tonsills out when she was 14, she wasn't sick but of course her throat was sore. She was constantly swallowing ice chips. Talk to your doctor or the surgeon and tell them about your phobia, I am sure they will give you some thing to calm your stomach down. They may do that any ways but to make you more at ease talk to him/her about it.

I'm 17. I've been under anesthetic before and was fine. But the thought of vomiting blood scares me.

Thank you for the advice I think I will talk to the doctor about it.

I had mine taken out when I was 10 (20 years ago) and all I remember was v* blood. It wasn't that bad from what I remember, I just didn't look at it that much. Of course, I was also on ly 10 and I was so groggy from the anesthesia, I really didn't have the energy to panick. I'm not sure if they've changed how they do the procedure now, but back then, the tonsils were cut out. Now, they might do it with laser and they might cortirize the area to minimize bleeding. As for my throat being sore, it was a little, ice cream made it feel better, stay away from hot liquids for awhile afterwards. Good luck!!

My little man is going in to have his out on Tuesday. My eldest had them done when he was 4 and 1 hour after the the surgery he was sitting up in bed eating chicken nuggets and chips. I'm sure you'll be fine. He was not sick once. I do believe it is the anaesthesia that makes people sick and not the operation itself. If you have had surgery before and was fine I'm sure you'll be okay this time.... you'll just have one hell of a sore throat

    Good luck

I had mine out when i was 10 (i'm 21 now) and i had no v* or n* at all. I remember my doc telling me that people usually only v* from that surgery if they swallow too much blood and i hadnt bled much so he said i'd be fine. I'm pretty sure they've advanced since then so people arent swallowing as much, if any blood! Try not to worry!

I had my adnoids out when I was very little, about 4, and I was very
ill from the anaesthetic (I don't want to frighten you). But that was
12 years ago and i'm sure that they have better meds these days that
don't cause nausea and or vomiting. Plus I was young then and the meds
they used were probably too strong for me or just the wrong mixture

Ive had a few sugeries - one for an absess on the roof of my mouth, and one having a mole removed from the top of my head ( I was awake for this one).

I don't remember feeling sick from the first surgery at all, I must have been about 10 at the time (13 years ago). My mom did say I walked around like a drunk for awhile afterwards thou.hehe.

    Im sure you'll be fine!

I had chronic tonsilitis when I was younger - to the point where I finally went to see a specialist. He told me, one more infection, and those suckers are coming out - I never ever had another infection again! I swear he scared my tonsilis or something

One of my best friends had her tonsils taken out about two weeks ago. She did get sick and v* She got nauseous and v* on the way home from the hospital, which she thinks was due to her pain meds. They ended up having to change them because they kept making her sick. I went and visited her at the hospital after her surgery, and she was eating and not having any nausea. She is pretty sure it was her pain meds making her sick, once her doc changed them, she was fine. She is still having some pain though. She had hers taken out on March 30th. She is a teacher and she said going back this week has been rough. She cant talk for very long without hurting, and she teaches 2nd grade, so she is talking alot during the day.

babydoll, my doctor told me the same thing when I was younger, if you have one more strep throat infection, your tonsils are coming out!!!! That was when I was 13. I never had strep agail til I was 23. I havent had it since then either.
AND ............ my children have never had strep ****KNOCK ON WOOD****

what you should do is talk to the surgeon an dexplain th esituation and ask them to give you ext anti emetics...let him kno wyou are petrified of this! And you really need an anti emetic afterwards in case of any n that can come from anethetics...they really are supposed to work for that...so just try and talk to them about it! and I am sure you will b eok! i dont think specificly getting your tonsils out causes v, but anesthetic can make SOME people n and v...

I agree with carolee, be very adament with your anesthesiologist about anti-nausea meds. Let them know straight up, you have a fear of v'ing and you want all the anti-emetics they will and can give you. The last time I had to have general anethesia was about two yrs ago. I did tell my doc about my fear and he assured me he would keep me from getting sick. He said with all the advances in medicines that very rarely do they have someone get sick from general anesthesia. I DID NOT get sick or even feel nauseous.

    Hi Shardonnay,

I had my tonsils out when i was 25 and i was fine with the anesthetic, but then (touch wood) i have never had any problems with any anesthetic i have had. I can remember being really groggy and my throat being sore for a bit but i did fine, they gave me soluable co codamol while i was in there for the pain and they were fine for me and sent me home with some, but i know some people have problems with codine. I must have been ok because i ate meat pie and mash for my lunch before they let me home the next day!

You will be fine hun, they won't see you in pain and they won't want you being sick either as it wont help the healing process in your throat. Do as others have said explain that you have the phobia and i'm sure they will give you anti emetics. Whenever i have been in hospital they have been very understanding with me.

Good luck hun and make sure you rest after as you will feel a little run down until you heal.
