I think most therapists ideally don't want you on meds either, but I believe the reason they put you on them first thing is to help you quell your anxieties until the therapy begins to work. A therapist I saw a few years ago told me it is sometimes counterproductive to try to do therapy when you are anxious 24/7. The meds will help keep you calm and focused while you learn the skillls you need to cope, then when you go off meds you will be fine-tuned in your coping skills - that sounded a little redundant, LOL..
