I have seen a few posts on this forum mentioning dependance on antiemetics, and I was wondering what that is about. Is it a physical addiction, or mental?

I believe it could be a combination of both.
- Your body gradually will build up a tolerance for medication (any medication), requiring you to take higher and higher doses of it each time in order for it to work.
- The mental addiction side of it could make one believe that they will V* unless they take the medince, despite the lack of a physical reason to V*. You might end up V* if you don't take the medicine simply because your mind will convince you bodythat the only thing stopping you from V* is the medicine, despite no organic reason to cause V*.
Abusing medication can hurt you in the long run. Tolerance levels and potential harm to the body by consuming medications that aren't mean to be in the body constantly could really hurt you --- for example, laxatives (some people literally have to take 50pills at at time to have a bowel movement). Use medication under supervision only or for short periods of time and you will acheive the best result.
I\'m always a shade of purple...

You think that you need them, when you really don't. You may take
gravol or some antiemetics you can get from your pharmacy when you take
a long drive, ride a boat in the case that you *may* get sick. Of
course there are people that take them because they do get motion
sickness, which is fine. But some people start to abuse them, like
taking them daily in the case that they might get sick, or taking them
at bed because they are afraid to wake up. Pretty soon you're taking
them daily and you feel that you have to take them because now you've
convinced yourself you might get sick if you don't, when in reality
you're doing the exact opposite. You're putting a substance into your
body that will ultimatley make you more sick if you continue to take
them. Once you acutally decide to stop taking them, that you come to
the realization that you don't need them you may experience headaches,
nausea, fatigue, anxiety at the fact that you may get sick. When you
start taking anti-emetics so often they begin to work less effectivley,
so there is more of a chance that you will get sick if you acutally do
take them for nausea/vomiting.
I know this from experience.
Taking a sabbatical from IES, moving on, and making concrete changes to live my life without fear.

So long, and thanks for all the fish.
