So...my wife is a third grade teacher and she came home yesterday telling me that she had a conference with one of her parents who informed her that the reason her child was not at school yesterday is because he was at home with terrible v* and d*...and she just emailed me from work and he is back at school today. dont people continue to be contagious for several days after symptoms disapear? should I be concerned that she will bring the germs home with her, or on her belongings - then I will risk exposure? or maybe she will get the virus from the child?? then maybe I will get it from her?? I know I worry too much, but I just always try to consider all aspects and possibilities?? should I be concerned do you think??

Okay, so my geek son-in-law the biologist is here with me as I read this post (lucky you). He says "if the child has recovered from the symptoms then there are antibodies present both in their blood and their gastro-intestinal system so the virus is "trapped" either way [stopped]. So if an antibody-surrounded virus 'touched' you then your own body's antibodies would kill it."

Re: your wife carrying it home on her clothes - not possible unless you lick her clothes after she's been there while the child is vomiting.

If she catches it (because she's been there while the child is vomiting AND ingested the particles) then you also could catch it from her IF you're there while she's vomiting AND you ingest the particles.

It's really not that easy a virus to get if YOU practice good hygeine and you're not ingesting anyone else's food (like on a cruise ship where it can be "everywhere" over the food if the chef is not practicing good hygeine.)

Long and short of it: if you don't want to catch a noro-virus ("sv") and so you practice really good hygeine (sensibly!) then you won't!Edited by: sage

lol - thanks - it's fun cuz I sort of know all that stuff but he's right in the middle of his pre-med exams about it all and sitting here with my daughter studying all the time. He's also unbelievably brilliant (valedictorian) and one heck of a nice guy. They're not married yet, but it's just easier to refer to him as son-in-law. At home I call him my sin-in-law...lol When he's done exams he's gonna help me write a sticky topic section about viruses and how they're transmitted - FAQs about viruses.
