Throwing some burgers on the grill this weekend? Keep them microbe-free by adding some chopped cilantro to your ground round.

The best way to protect your family from food-borne illness is to cook your meats to an appropriate temperature. However, fresh cilantro appears to have antibacterial properties that may help ward off Salmonella, a common cause of food poisoning. If your kids aren't fans of cilantro, adding a dash of cinnamon or oil of oregano will also do the trick.

I just got this in my email today and decided to pass it on!</TD></TR></T></TABLE>

BLECH I hate cilantro! I actually tell people I'm allergic to it so I'm sure that I don't get anything with cilantro in it! But cinnamon I can use or oregano oil! So thanks for sharing that!

Cilantro - is that coriander? I think it is - we don't call it cilantro here in UK. I actually love both the actual herb and ground coriander (from the seed), I add it to a lot of my recipes!

I think this is a bad idea. It is using a spice as a crutch. Spices are not the answer to preventing food poisoning. Cooking foods to proper temperature - ground beef needs to be cooked well done, with no pink remaining - and keeping food preparation surfaces clean is the key to preventing food poisoning.

That's what the email said, cook your meats to an appropriate temperature. Maybe the cilantro helps prevent microorganisms from growing. Time to research

I agree with Doug. Even the link you provided links over to the CDC &amp; Harvard...neither of which say anything about cilantro, cinammon or anything else. Good hygeine and proper cooking all the way through is the key.

Oh...and cilantro is a type of parsley with a minty, spicy taste. It's not coriander!

But...click on that salmonella link that donna gives, then click on the top hit and read about it. It makes sense.

I have heard the same about onion. When I used to eat ground beef, I would always mix onion in it. It's probably not a good idea to count too much on it, but hell both onion and cilantro are yummy so why not?

As far as I know and I cook with it almost daily...cilantro and coriander are the same thing! Coriander is the seed of cilantro.
