Hi, Welcome to the site. I have a 9 year old daughter and I was terrified of her getting sick too, and still am. It has happened twice and I tell you, your motherly instincts just kick in and you deal with it. You don't have time to think about it. When she has been sick, I just wash my hands, don't touch my face, and use bleach each time she gets sick. This coming from somebody that never thought I could handle it.

Trust me, you will get through it and everything will be okay. I still dread and worry about the next time, but I know we will be fine.

Feel free to PM me if you ever want to talk. There arealso great people on this site that can offer great advice.

I am nursing her...she is 7 weeks old now! Thanks so much for the
responses...When do they really start getting sick? Do you always catch what
they get> Sometimes I wonder what I was thinking becoming a mother....

I hear you, but being a mother is the most wonderful thing. Well, you are probably getting used to the spitting up by now. I think they can get sick at anytime, but mine didn't v* until she was 4. She did have plenty of colds and ear infections starting at about 3 months. I think I have a fairly good immune system and caught a few of her colds, but never when she has v*.

Trust me when I say you will be fine and try not to worry about those things because it really doesn't do any good. I am going to try really hard to follow my own advice.

    Nursing helps a lot!
I didn't nurse my son who is now 13. He got sick with sv* several times as a toddler. My 2 girls aged 5 and almost 3 have never had sv* persay. My one daughter v* a couple times a couple years ago, went to sleep and woke up great! My baby got sick a couple times also at about 13 months. after a couple times, she also went to sleep and woke up fine. Other then that, only a carsickness episode once and thats it. I have seen a huge difference in the breastfed kids. I did breastfeed for 15 months each. I think if you can do it for 3 months at least, you will have a lot of immunity. They can get sick at anytime, but its rare until they start putting things in their mouths, so you have a ways to go yet. You do get through it, and having my kids is the best decision of my life. Congratulations by the way!

I agree, nursing is a BIG factor. I didn't exclusively nurse my first 2 and they are puke machines, I nursed my son for almost 12 months and he is a healthy boy, only 1 ear infection!!

mine had colds as babies....my oldest had her first sv at 4 and gave it to her sister who was 1 at the time. that was the first time ever. then last year in January...they got it. they were 8 and 11 at the time....nice long span too!!

I believe that good hygiene, vitamins, good food and PLENTY of sleep is a key of staying healthy. and no matter how cold or hot it is...they should have fresh air everyday....even just for 10-30 minuts a day.

My daughter takes "Glyco-Bears" made by Mannatech and I swear by them. My daughter has been on them since age 2. These are chewable, but when she was younger she took the gummy bear type by the same company. Her daycare provider asked if all the kids could go on them because she had cancer and she felt they really helped prevent illness. She was on them too and thought it would be helpful if the kids weren't sick a lot. Anyway, my daughter v* once at age 4 (I don't think it was the sv) and once when she last year when she was almost 9. She gets a cold here and rarely a fever, but that is it. She had ear infections as a baby, but not after she started taking the vitamins. I don't know if it is just coincidence, but she will be on these vitamins until she moves out. You can visit their websiteat www.mannatech.com.

I agree, it is hard for sure, my daughter is 13 months, and has v'd a few times, only from a SV* once, thank thank the Good Lord, I only had d* and a fever, my husband v'd though...It IS easier when it's your children, it really is! I give my daughter, Poly Visol vitamins by Enfamil and they seem to work pretty well...

You have to buy them online and they are probably more spendy than vitamins you can get at the store. I think it's like $23 for a bottle of 60. It says to give one tablet twice per day, but I only give once and that seems to help. I am afraid if I give her 2 she will get v*...silly huh! One more thing you should know, they don't taste good at all. Since she has been taking them since she was 2 she is used to it, and still has a hard time with the taste. I tried one, and they taste pretty bad.
