I just want to alert everyone who has dogs of my experience today:

My chihuahua Ethel is just like a goat---she eats EVERYTHING!!! Whereas, my other chihuahua Lucy doesn't eat anything but her food and some table food. Well, today I had a tube of oil paint (for canvases) on my floor and she ate through the tube and ingested some of the paint. I thought nothing of it, since she eats stuff (before I catch her) and she's fine. Well, she must have eateb alot of it, because she started to v* (5 times total), and it was all white (color of the paint). I figured it was good that she was getting it out of her system. I mean it, from one minute to the next, I looked at her and she looked like death! Her face was really pink and swollen! Her eyes were almost swollen shut, her mouth was swollen, and she had raised, red blotches all over her head and face! I was concerned that her thraot would close, because she was obviously having a bad allergic reaction to the paint. It was the scariest thing I've seen!! We rushed her to the animal hospital where they gave her a shot of diphenhydramine (active ingredient in Benadryl) and observed her for about 30 minutes. Thank God she was OK--my daughter andI were crying so hard, Ethel looked so awful and was lethargic! We got to bring her home and had to give her 1/2 tab of Benadryl tonight, and she should be 100% by tomorrow. My point is, that oil paints could probably cause this reaction in animals, so please don't leave them lying around like I did! If she were to have had this reaction overnight, she may have died because we wouldn't have noticed! We are sooooooo glad that she's OK. I just wanted to let you guys know this, hopefully it's useful info

Aww....poor thing....I am glad she is going to be ok though!! My dog got stung by a bee this year, and she had a simaliar reaction. Her face blew up, her eyes swelled shut so we ran her to the vet, and they gave her some fluids and diphenhydramine and she was better the next day.

Oh no, what an awful experience for you all - I hope Ethel makes a quick recovery. I have oil paints around, although nowadaysI always paint with watercolours and gouache, but my fiance uses oils now and again. Our dog eats everything too - so thanks for the warning!

i'm glad she is okay! i also have a chihuahua, named Nacho, and he eats everything. This past fall he got a hold of a pill that was a mix of vicadin (sp?) and tylenol. tylenol is poisonous to dogs so he got very sick and had to be in the hospital for a couple of days. they even had to call doggy poison control! who knew they even had such a thing... He got the pill because my step-dad (who is taking it because he had a knee replacement) was keeping it loose in his pocket and it fell out. so make sure you are always careful with medications too!
