    Default My Doc wont listen

Ok, so last year while my hubby was deployed I went to my doctor because I am fed up with being an emet. I am not asking for an overnight cureall. I dont even expect to be cured of it. I just want to be a little less panicked when i feel sick or the kids do. I want to be somewhat rational about it. I told my Doc that I am emetophobic and his response was, no your arent, you are just stressed b/c your husband is gone. No doc really, i have had this problem since i was a child and it has gotten progressively worse. He said, no dont worry about it when he comes home things will calm down and you will be fine. This guy is a psychologist as well as a family practice dr. how can he say that when i am telling him I have a phobia? We are a military family and our insurance requires my primary care manager to refer me to a psychologist or a psychaitrist. I can't even go see anyone else to find out how to get treatment if this dr doesnt refer me. How can i get him to listen. I have approached him since my husband has come home and he still says that its just stress, only now its the stress of him coming home. uuggggggghhhhh! Any ideas? Are there any free self help techniques I could use?

Maybe you can contact your insurance company and ask to have a new doctor?

How infuriating! How dare he undermine you like that. How unprofessional and unsympathetic. Can you seek a second opinion elsewhere? If not, can you put in a polite request to this guys superior to say that you feel he wasn't taking you seriously and would appreciate a repeat consultation with someone who will not make you feel so belittled? Good luck x

Can you request a change in primary care, THEN ask for a referral for that? Or tell him that the "stress" is too much, and you want a referral to a therapist to help deal with the "stress" then when you go be like "ok buddy, here's the REAL deal..."

I`ve been there, not about emet, but with doctors who just don`t listen. It was much worse in the 70`s, when most gp`s were men, & seemed to think that all women of childbearing age were a bit simple, & making a fuss over nothing. I had gynealogical problems when I was in my 20`s, but instead of listening to me, my doctor would just hand me a script for tranquillisers to which I eventually got hooked. It took me months to get off them with the support of a new supportive gp.

First of all, yay for him coming home soon!!!
Have you tried military one source? They offer free counselling for military members/dependents and can help you to be referred into therapy.

    http://www.militaryonesource.com

There is the number on it and some information, I am sure they can't help you if your psm isn't. I'm not sure if it could also help calling tricare if the doctor refuses you help when you need it?

Hope this helps and that you can get the help you need. I think doing the step to actually seek help is awesome and it's a shame that your doctor isn't willing to listen!
