Default Moms with kids in school....

How often do your kids get a sv? Every year?

Last year was my oldest DD's first year in school full time. She caught one in February, and everyone else caught it too. She caught another one in May, and her little sister and my husband caught it (hubby got it mildly this time, he just felt off for 3 days, no other symptoms, but my littlest girl had it quite bad....I avoided it that time). I'm hoping we only get one this year, if any at all....though I don't think we'll be that lucky to avoid it altogether.

Last year (2nd grade) was the first year that my son's ever had it more than once. He caught it in Nov. and then again in March. The first time around nobody else caught it and the 2nd he caught from my hubby who brought it home from church, so you really can't blame that one on his being in school. In fact, he caught the bug in K from our carpool and in 1st from a consignment sale we all went to (both kids were v*ing at the same time with that one ), so he's only caught it from school one time. I've never caught any of them and neither as the hubby or my youngest. Just because they are in school does NOT guarantee that they are going to get sick, and truth be told, when they do it's never a big deal. We pop in a movie, hand over a bucket and it's usually done by flick #3! It's a drag, nobody likes it, but really when it's all said and done it's one of the quickest sicknesses there is, if not THE quickest. It's gross and messy but only a few hours and with videos to distract really not that big of a thing.

P.S. My best friend has 4 kids ranging in age from 3-11 and last year NONE of them caught it. It's certainly not a certain thing. They DID catch lice and she said she's much rather deal with v* than that! HA!

My eldest has been in school 6 years, my middle one 4 years and my little one has only just started - in that time they have had it once. My middle once also v* when she has a fever, but I know the difference so that doesn't bother me as much. In a family of 5 when they caught it, 2 adults felt n*, 2 children v* once, but middle child was very poorly. They are not great with hygine, despite my protests so I think they have been quite lucky considering

I hate to say it, syrup, but as much as I dislike v, I think I would rather deal with it than lice. Lice are an enormous pain and then people all think no matter what you've done, you still have them for some time afterwards. My elderly uncle got lice last year from some of my cousins and it took him two months to get rid of them. :/ Poor guy! Syrup is right. Kids don't even always get colds/flus every year and that crap is actually airborne. My kids get a cold about every three or four years. We've only had one really bad year with sv (knock on wood) in the past 10 years. Hopefully, we won't have another year like that! No, it's not a foregone conclusion kids will get sv every year. I grew up with a pretty filthy mother and even I didn't get it every year as a kid.

I hear you Grace47, we had the lice thing here a few years back and it was TERRIBLE! It just gave me the grossest feeling. UGH! We had it over Halloween and it gave me the eeby jeebies much easier than the costumes did!

I know. I wanted to see my Uncle so bad, but hubby did not want him over until two months after the lice were gone. Sorry to thread jack!

Good to hear that not everyone gets it every year. Both sv's that we had last year came from my daughters class - she was the one who brought them home. We thought we were being super clean and hygienic about it - so I have NO clue how we ALL caught it the first time around (I was the only one who didn't v* from it - I just had nausea, fever and body aches).

As for head lice - we've never dealt with that. I hope we never have to!

I was talking to someone about this not too long ago. I read something once that said kids get svs at least twice a year. That is crazy and completely untrue. My kids do not catch svs every year. I have a 12 year old. She hasn't caught a sv from school since probably 1st grade. She's had them, yes, but she's caught them from other places. She went 4 1/2 years (before this past winter) without catching a single sv! I went all through high school and a year of college without catching one. Honestly, most of the times we've had it in the past 10 years we've caught it from somewhere other than school. Last time was from a family Christmas gathering. Most of the people there got it. (A baby had diarrhea and none of us knew it except her mother...who didn't tell anyone) Lice we have never had either...thank god! As much as I hate svs I would much rather deal with that than lice!

Actually threads like this don't work. Because anxiety will make you think the one person who does it get every year somehow increases the odds for you.

IMO some get it a lot, some don't. In some cases hygiene is to blame. In others cases I think some just do not get them. I hardly ever washed my hands after touching doorknobs or anything and I never got one until I was 21.

I knew a lady who claimed her son had never had sv when he was 10 years old. I didn't totally believe her at the time, but I guess it's possible. The ideal though is not to worry about it so much. I know, easier said than done.

^ I've caught it two out of three times my girls have had it. I didn't throw up, but I was super nauseous. I go a little crazy when one of my girls has it. If my husband is around, he looks after them - they go to the basement (that's where our guest bed is, bathroom, big living area with tv and toys, nice woodstove, etc...it's like a mini apartment!). If he's not around, I look the other way while holding the bucket for them, I pretty much stop eating for a week, don't eat anything that requires me to use my hands (like sandwiches, etc....I only use cutlery). I'm insane, BUT, I think that's why I haven't caught it as bad as the rest of my family. Neither of my girls have ever had diarrhea from it - just throwing up. If I could catch it and just get diarrhea, I'd be FINE with that. As careful as I am though, I HAVE caught it twice....and I really have noooo idea how, it's just super contagious I guess. I had my last sv when I was 11, then didn't get another one until I was 27. Since having kids, I've had 2 in 5 years. I am trying so hard not to dwell on her bringing one home this school season, but every night I lie in bed before falling asleep and I think "is this going to be the night?". Ugh. I hate the anxiety!

Not a mum, but I'm in my eleventh year in school. I've never caught a stomach virus from school; once from preschool... but only once. My brother was, however, different. It depends on your habits and immune system. My mom is rarely sick; my dad hasn't vomited in 30+ years. He'll be fifty this year!

I've got one in fifth grade and one in second. Last year was a rough year for v* in this house, however it was only once from a bug. We all had Noro run through the house in January in a matter of five days, good news it was short lived. I had the poops, but no n* or v* thankfully. Hubby had both BAD, he hit it the worst I think b/c he works such long hours and doesn't take good care of himself like I nag him to do. Both kids had the v*, but no d*, it was over in a matter of 6-8 hours. March was a HORRIBLE month for us though. Son started the first day with strep which he hadn't had in 3 years, luckily no v* just yucky throat and a tummy ache, then he got hives from the antibiotics, doc. said he probably developed the allergy to it after no having it for so long that was fun. During that same week he also had a touch of the coughing, achy influenza. Daughter got it and then so did I. By the time we were all over that, daughter got strep and she was v* a lot from that. I was never so happy to see a month end! Out of 31 days our family was sick 21 of them, hubby was the only one to really escape it b/c he was never home! May brought another bout of illness for my daughter, she caught a bug and was so sick for a solid week, off and on random v* and a lot of d*, but nobody else caught that one, the pediatrician felt she had developed reflux and tummy inflammation that was irritating her gut. A round of antibiotics and Zantac solved that. I was THRILLED to see summer come in June! Just praying that this year is easier on us. We already got our first colds right after school started, but thankfully they weren't serious and were short lived. I'm going to start mixing vitamins and supplement cocktails for my kids this year, I'm DETERMINED we are going to be healthier all the way around for the winter, not just with the *sv, but with colds, flus, strep, etc.

I hear you - my daughter had strep, pink eye twice, a bunch of colds/coughs, the stomach flu twice (once bad, once not so bad). She was sick literally every 2 weeks all school year long. Then, whatever she caught, my 2 yr old DD also caught. Thankfully all I caught was a couple colds, and the stomach flu....but with no v* or d*, just fever, sore stomach, body aches and nausea.

No not every year. I have one kid in school, and one in daycare. They seem to get a couple of throat/ear infections, a handful of colds and maybe one yucky tummy (nausea but not necessarily a *sv).

We last had a *sv in January (all four of us), and it was my daughters first in 18 months, and my sons first ever (he was 2.5 at the time!

Last year was a nightmare for us, with 11 V bugs between 3 of the kids. Normally, like Valen, once a year. We've four children though so the stakes are high!. Ironically, my emet increased exponentially after our fourth baby was hospitalized with noro. This fear is just so frustrating!
