Default Promethazine and Ondansetron interactions? (anxiety once again)

My doctor said that I might have an inner ear imbalance -- BPPV -- and noted that Promethazine would actually help with the dizziness.

That sucks. That means I will either take Promethazine for dizziness, or ondansetron for nausea. Fun. Taking both I feel wouldn't be a good thing.

Any severe interactions with them? Anybody have experience with benign paroxysmal positional vertigo?

Last night, I was really nauseated and tried the Ondansetron dissolving pills. Firstly, they tasted HORRIBLE. It was like chalk and oranges had children. The fact that you swallow the dissolved pill without liquids was horrible too. The taste alone almost pushed me over the limit. The pill didn't take effect, and I'm guessing it was due to it not being sublingual? I did hesitantly take another under my tongue and that zapped the nausea rapidly. I'm serious about hesitantly. I was lying in bed for more than an hour with no relief. Not fond of dissovable pills having retched tastes... thought they gave those pills to people who couldn't swallow pills or needed immediate relief?

UGH and I'm so dizzy! I started exercising so I can get back into shape, but UGH. I'm only 52kg, but being skinny and out of shape is the worst. If dizziness keeps happening, I won't mind being out of shape.

You should really check this out at http://drugs.com use their interaction checker. If you still aren't sure talk to the doctor who prescribed this or any pharmacist. I have heard of the two being prescribed together for chemo patients, where the zofran stops actual v* but the promethazine is needed to control the nausea. There are usually ways to treat vertigo like you have. At least one IES member had significant improvements with following a physical therapy if you will regimen for vertigo. This was for a case of it caused by a shift in crystals in this person's inner ear, and the idea of the therapy is to reposition them appropriately.

I take both of them everyday together and I have never had a problem... My zofran is pill form and promethazine is suppository form.. The only thing I have found is that if I skip doses or change up my regimin I have to deal with constipation.....

I've had this issue and my physical therapist was able to walk me thru the steps shift the crystals back into place. You can try looking on WeMD for those steps, I think they have some good instructions that you could use. And if you feel you need to take something, you might want to try motion sickness over the counter meds. That's what my doctor suggested for this particular problem. Basically the crystals in your ears help tell your brain if you see things as if you were in an upright position or a sideways (like laying down) position. When the crystals are move around in an area they aren't supposed to be it's like one second your standing upright and the next your laying down and your brain has to catch up to that information. That is where the dizziness comes in.

I was prescribed both at the same time several times. I have never had a problem. I have also received both together when I was in the ER, and when I was recovering from surgery. During the surgery thing I was on phenergan, zofran, and morphine. I'm still here to tell the tale.

Can I ask why you would need both? I'm generally curious as why the promethazane wouldn't work for both?

Ugh. He wanted me to do a test while I visited, and assured me I wouldn't get nauseated. Was skeptical and denied, and lied saying I was very busy lol. He didn't believe me, but now I have an appointment to get some test done that might get me dizzy lol. Not my idea of fun. Can BPPV be fixed?

Promethazine never really takes away ambient nausea. I don't have nearly have as much dizzy spells while on them, but nausea really doesn't change. I used to break them under my tongue to feel immedaite effects, but even then, the results varied greatly. They didn't do anything for the Norovirus for me at all lol. Ondansetron did actually stop the vomiting though which is saddening.

If the mechanism of action of promethazine is similar to dimenhydrinate, no they won't do anything for noro, because it doesn't act on blocking the same trigger. The anti-emetics that act on motion sickness actually stop the "motion sickness pathway" that triggers v*. Other medications (like domperidone) act on the chemoreceptor trigger zone, and perhaps some act directly on the vagus nerve. There are several mechanisms that will ultimately trigger v*, and different medications are used depending on which one is the cause of the current nausea. That's why your promethazine will help with the dizziness but the zofran is more likely to stop v* from a viral source.

This may help you to learn more about BPP. It's a link to WebMD…

Just had a thought, if promethazane is more for motion sickness n* and zofran actually stops the v* why would my dr prescribe promethazane for my n* before my period?

That's a confusing question to answer... I don't want to illicit anxiety. I wish I could find a document I found a while back that showed the highest success rates of Anti-emetics with different ailments...

It's not so much causing me anxiety just wondering if I should ask about Zofran instead.

I would. It works better for me... but Promethazine seems to help slight aches and pains as well :/
